[#1542379]

Basically a few years ago I bought an Alan cx frame, but never built it up... One of the bb threads is fooled, for about half an inch, it looks like someone triedto put the wrong thread bottom bracket into it. But there is enough decent thread left to screw into ifi could get to it, anything I can do?

get your LBS to recut / chase the threads with the correct tap. Might save it

You might get away with a really long BB shell. Worth trying to get the thread re-cut but that might not save it (and you'll want to take this to a shop you really trust!)

My brother's old bike only has thread in one side after a bit of amateur mechanicking went wrong, I just fitted a square taper BB, threaded it in from the other side and glued the other spacer onto the BB, possibly not recommended but it's still working fine.

this could be what you need, never tried one myself, but it sounds useful.

If it's really knackered you have the option of paying £££'s to get it reamed & replaced or if the frame isn't worth much / your favourite you could try aralditing in a BB which allows you to replace the bearings.

Just give it to me, I was after an Alan. Hope it wasn't one I was bidding on 😉
Got a budget unused Graham Weigh cross frame with headset no forks if you want to swap.
Other than that I know loads of engineers that would sort that out.
What's the frame like in general?

Cheers for the advice, it's a lovely old frame, and in excellent nick, apart from that it looks like it's not actualy been built up... Oldgit, if you are interested in it, I could show you some details?

I did that on my old DMR and took it to a shop who recut it for, unless your very confident I would not recommend doing it yourself but they should be able to do it!

If you take it to a shop they'll have the right tools to re-cut the thread so you'll know that the threads there are in the right place. Half an inch isn't _too_ bad (although it's not wonderful), you could usually get away with just fitting a normal BB anyway, maybe with PTFE (plumbers') tape in the dodgy bit but it's best to get it checked out with the proper tools.

Not racing, I was thinking of building it into a sort of hack bike, but it is a bit nice for that... It's an older bonded one...

Nice.
I was out bid by £1.50 on an Alan in my size. Ended up buying a cheap cx frame only to find the guy that outbid me had put it up for sale again two weeks later. It was the wrong size for him and he didn't realize that supplied without forks meant he wouldn't be getting the bit that holds the front wheel on 🙄
