I bought a second hand BFe on another forum advertised as having had bb and disk mounts faced and head tube reamed. I asked the question why had the head tube been reamed and was the headset still a tight fit.....To which I got the answer the it was too tight a fit before and now it's perfect.
Well my headset turned up yesterday go to fit and the cups press in almost completely by hand. ๐ฅ
But then I had a brainwave, every new frame i've fitted a headset to has paint on the inside of the headtube so 3 thin coats of enamel later and the cups are a good tight fit and all is well in the world. ๐
Just thought I'd share in case it helps anyone else.
Loctite bearing fit.
its a bit of a bodge, and you may have issues over time when the paint compresses with fore-aft loading on the cups from impacts and braking, but you've inspired me as a way to bodge the slightly flared headtube on my round-town bike ๐
Never seen paint on the inside of a head-tube - there shouldn't really be any there.
I'm going to use Loctite 651 as well but I wouldn't have trusted it by itself.
Maybe not all frames but I've had a Cove and Santa Cruz when the inside of the headtube was painted the same as the outside of the frame.
I don't think it's going to go anywhere as there was no wobble just not enough inteference on the fit.
I've had a similar issue with my headset cups but this has been down to fitting the headset in multiple frames. I've never had an issue with any of the frames its been in.
Top bodge!
