What's the right way to apply them?

lightly sand the area..

stick the patch on..

i find it helps to have the tube slightly inflated.. and then apply some pressure to the patch with both of my thumbs after its stuck on..

same as a normal patch to be honest.. just without the vulcanising solution..

IME you need to sand scrupulously.

Fit new tube, save Park patch until your hydration bladder leaks.

Those park patches are great but if its next to the seam of the tube then they tend not to work.

Also put them in a small plastic zip bag to keep them dry. If they get wet at all then the glue is a bit dodgy.

Sanding it down to get rid of grease etc is the secret
