hi,

looking at a new wheel set or two. Need cheap and reliable, although every gram saved is nice.

What are your experiences of....
- http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=46&products_id=203
- http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=40&products_id=345
(2xXC, 1xDH. For two different bikes!)

they seem to be ideal. The major stumbling point is the lack of any big branding, so i can't guage their reliability.

All help is greatly appreciated!
HR

Just got a set of their ss wheels... look superb for the money and the xc rims seem to have the exact same design/profile/weight as my mavic 717's 😉

£90 for that XC/AM wheelset is a steal!

They were just reviewed in that other Mountain Biking magazine from the UK. The XC wheelset one month and the more all mountain in the month before. Both were voted best value for there class and from reading the review parts they were very impressed with them.

I've have a pair of the subzero wheels on my hardtail for the last 6 months or so. Been pretty much faultless. They aren't the lightest but seem extremely well built, for the money you can't go wrong. Still run true and the hub makes a nice clicky sound if thats you thing.

I bought some of the XC/AM wheels a couple of months ago. For the money, you can't go wrong. Cartridge bearings, light weight and well made. Definitely some of the best money I've spent on my bike.

right, i'm getting 2 sets then. One of the XC or XC/AM, and the more DH orientated then.

thank you for your advice,

I've got a singlespeed rear with Flow rim which I've had for a few months. Has been fine so far, the only thing is that is was a little light on grease in the freehub. That was soon sorted and it seems fine now.

Do the hubs take standard/easy to source bearings?

I recently bought a switch EVO rear hub with the XC-430 rim, it comes out 100g lighter than the XT + XC717 wheel it replaces despite being a bit wider.
The only thing I can't find is any kind of manual for replacing bearings or freehubs etc? anyone seen this?
Mark

Seen a few people having issues with the supalegga freehub after a couple of months, pick-up took a lot of crank rotation. Are the switch hubs different? If so how are they performing? Very tempted at those prices!

I thought the superleggera hubs were for road use? The switch hub is a XC/Am type hub i think. Can't give any feedback on the switch as it is still essentially brand new.

I've got swith hubs on vapour rims and another set on voltage rims, they survived half of last winter and all summer (the bigger ones came to morzine for a week) the hubs have been faultless so far, had a good dig round last weekend on both sets and are both spinning fine no faults. Better than over priced crap from the north of england with a green logo and no faith or charity...

The rims are made and re-logo'ed as SSC by Mach 1 rims, (also French but not Mavic).
Sold as mach 1 for nigh on same prices as Superstar ones through cyclelife affiliated lbs's if you want to go and have a look at them for real. I've seen some at the superstar stand at BBB last year, and although they are nice looking rims they are more 317 than 717 territory.

Some of the hubs are same as Halo ones though i forget which.
I just built up a superstar rear hub for a mate and certainly seems well made/machined, most problems were with the eaqrlier superleggera ones.

I am sure a simple search on here will reveal some comments of aftersales support, though I would also try a few other bike forums for their views, as this forum would seem to have a special level of poor regard for SSC.

I've had some 29er wheels on Superleggera hubs. The bearings on the front hub worse out in next to no time but I replaced them with some decent ones for very little money (less than a tenner) so no real ussues. Nothing has gone wrong with the rear hub yet and anyway, they have a 2 year warranty. What's not to like?
