Any use? (I've never used a trainer in my life)

Would a singlespeed bike play OK with a trainer (Normal QR axle)?

Is a trainer tyre a must have?

No they look like landfill to me.

You can get a semi smart trainer from a quality brand for less than a 100 quid:

https://www.halfords.com/cycling/turbo-trainers/trainers/elite-supercrono-force-smart-turbo-trainer

I bet you would have loads more fun with it by using app based training programs and it would be better built too.

If 100 is too much then my local facebook selling page has loads of quality 'dumb' trainers by Tacx, Kinetic and Elite for around £50, some barely used as people upgrade to smart trainers or have found they never used them.

Two-way interactive turbos (where apps like Zwift can tell the turbo to simulate an incline from their virtual route) made turboing far more appealing for me. I think I used my old Elite Mag Volaire ~10 times (with no more than ~20mins max in a session) after buying in 2006 and passing it on in 2016(?), I've done 10+ sessions on my Direto over the last ten days with duration being approx 25-60mins per session.

The Aldi one will do a job, but IMO you need to be very focussed on a goal/target to keep using it for anything more than a clothes horse after a few weeks. 😉
