it would probably work better with pedals these days.
i like the Spirograph designed spoke lacing design on the rear wheel though.
40 down a grassy field...must have been hairy
I used to dream about that bike...
The birth of monster cross ๐
Wow, that takes me back. I remember seeing pics of Tomac on that bike just as I started getting into mountain bikes as a nipper.
Look at those Manitous! Fantastic. There's more travel in the flippin' tyres...
I like the retro stuff as much as the next rose tinted spec wearing chap(started mountain biking in 1988) but the DH courses now are a whole galaxy away from what they were then.
As Nickc said it was mostly a grassy slope or a fast forest road.
As noteeth said that, dream bike. Have to remember Jonny t rode the Cross country on the same bike
tomac was fantastic tho........... 8)
imagine going down the Fort Bill course on that ๐
(geek mode on) The rumbling noise them disk drives made at speed was awesome. Seriously takes me back to riding with an old mate, Seems like yesterday.
Wow, are road sti shifts really twenty years old!

I've got a set of Pace Downhill forks in the garage. I know they're the downhill ones because the travel is a a massive 75mm!
Very cool - I'd rather own the first one than the second that's for sure.

Yep, STI road levers were introduced in 90, rapidfire mtb was 89.
Are you building one?
And the best thing about the drop barred Yeti? Johnny T would STILL kick your ass riding it! ๐
Wonderful... ๐

I have absolutely no doubt he would..
You wouldn't mind though, because he's Jonny T!! Nice bloke apparantly.
You know what they used rigid forks racing downhill!
I'd thought sti was introduced earlier but it's not even in the tour (from what I can see) in 89.
Wasn't the drop bar thing something instigated by his coach? Something about being in the same position for all bikes he rode? Hence drops for the roads, drops off road. I remember that first time round - I must be getting old.
Tomac started off as a roadie and for a while did both. Like Macgyver says it was to keep his bike positioning similar.
Saw him race that bike XC at Plymouth way back. He was a style king and would glady cross up, throw whips off anything.
I also had a Tioga disc drive. It was awful, forever out of true despite hamfisted tweaks. Sold it to a German via one of the mags...took 3 months of mags to sell though.....
