Ok I am now officially [s]geeky[/s]cool and I have a smartphone running on android. I have indeed downloaded angry birds and endomondo. However, I am a bit puzzled as to how I can use the data recorded buy the gps to check the altitude of a ride? I shall add that me being a cheapstake, I don't have the 3G on my phone. Cheers...
at the end of my ride, it automatically uploads all the recorded data (via 3G but i guess once you're in wifi range it'd do the same) and it shows both altitude and elevation change (up and down) in the stats...
ok I'll try it right now cheers...
i assume you created an endomondo account? mine's linked to both FB and twitter too, so it automatically posts links to the "workout" once it's uploaded but if you just go to endomondo's site and log in you should be able to view the info from there direct.
Unless you do live updating you shouldn't need a data connection unless you are wanting to see a map of your current location...
sorted...
It's on endomondo.com.
Works ok, however looks like the gps mapping app isn't too good. Altitude is a bit wrong, and I have been clocked at 183 km/h ๐
I find the GPS to be well out when I use it. Typically up to 1km out in 10km. The same route on three occasions has been between 9.6 and 11.6 km.
Checked with a Garmin the 9.6 is not far off.
Average speed seems to be equally unreliable.
Not sure what is going on with it.
Try Runkeeper - used it on the same route last two weekends, same distance both times, 16.9k on a trail that's labelled 17k.
Probably varies with handset mind.
Thanks HG will give that a go.
I found that the pro version was massively inaccurate with the battery saving option turned on. Pretty accurate with it turned off though.
If you're just wanting to record routes for your own reference have you tried mytracks?
Mytracks was great on my android phone, pretty accurate and consistent altitude tracking and graphing.
I have since moved to iPhone and have been bitterly disappointed with mapmyride, endomondo and viewranger premium (they're ok for mapping generally but crap at Altitude tracking for anyone who does any amount of climbing).
Android wins!
....unless anyone knows better?

Def varies with the handset. Endomondo on my Iphone was consistently recording about 10% less than on my mate's HTC Android handset. Switched to Runkeeper and it agrees with both Endomondo on my mate's HTC and also with my bike computer.
It definitely varies with the handset being used - my SE X10 Mini Pro is a lot more accurate than a friends HTC Desire HD.
I did an update recently that says it improved accuracy and it seems to have improved it a lot. It used to track the correct distance but about 10 metres north of my location but now it's much better. Not sure if that update is worth looking for.
yeah, it's not the app itself that's (sometimes) poor but rather the GPS chip and/or the firmware on yr handset. mine's not too bad now on gingerbread (SGS) since the infamous GPS satellite lock and accuracy issues seem to have been ironed out. for now!
You could always try Sports Tracker, now available on iPhone and Android as well as Symbian where it all started off.

Oh and there's no premium version of it. It's all for free including the online service.
I use sports tracker, and it gives all the same readings as my mates garmin edge, and its linked to google earth so you can view any wrong turns ect.
