[#9379253]

I'm down in Chippenham for a week in July on a training course, as I'll have the nights and most of the afternoons to myself I thought I'd take the bike.

I haven't really come across much in the area, but did find a link to The Ridgeway.

It looks like it could fill a few evenings, say if I drive to one point and ride out and back.

Any thoughts and viable alternatives?

Chippenham has a track that goes straight from the station (give or take 300m) to the Ridgeway.
It's flat for that section apart from one little bit and really easy to follow.

Start with that to Avebury ๐Ÿ™‚

Nice one, cheers.

Is there anything else? I'm more than likely staying at the Bowood Manor and apparently it has quite substantial grounds?

Don't know here sorry, we just use Chippenham to Reading/Streatley as one of our longer training rides.

I will suggest the range of hills such as Morgan's Hill, Tan Hill, Milk Hill between Calne and Marlborough. Easy on a hardtail and nice rolling hills. If you want something steeper, I will go SW of Chippenham near Bath like Box. Also south of Marlborough there is West Woods with some moderate DH tracks.

I'm not sure they will let you ride around Bowood grounds ordinarily.

Marlborough Downs / West Woods a good shout.. Avebury end of the Ridgeway actually does carry on toward Tan Hill etc. if you get an OS, and it's quite nice - the Ridgeway itself is a bit dull, but fine views and some great history in the area - plenty to fill an evening.

From Bowood do a loop via heddington out to Cherhill(above Avebury) then Compton Basset back on the Calne to Chippenham cycle path to the bridge over the A4

From Cherhill you could add lots of trails

Follow Ridgeway to Streatley ๐Ÿ˜‰

To get to Reading go over river Thames to Goring, turn right at end of railway bridge, follow road past railway station, bear right wehen it forks at end of houses, follow Thames Path to Whitchurch and then keep going in a straight line to Caversham (suburb of Reading) via Mapledurham

I don't have a gpx or anything I'm afraid, but we found our way using common sense, its hard to go far wrong.
