[#1050845]

I'm afraid I can't take credit for it, I saw a guy with the solution riding in the torrential rain this morning. Anyway what is this holy grail? How do we keep our feet dry while riding? I hear you ask - simple.
Get 2 carrier bags (aldi in this case) put them over your shoes, tie the tops to your shins with elastic bands (sections of old innertubes will be the bike aficionado's choice) then pull the bottom of your waterproof pants over the top of the bags. Sorted! Waterproof membrane and no run in off your legs, dry feet in any weather guaranteed.

Now obviously only the inverse snobs of this forum would be happy to wear aldi bags, I can see a brand allegiance thing going on with the big names (asda tesco sainsburys) and it'll be interesting to see who comes out on top. There'll be the few who can't bear to go with the majority using M&S bags and the flash gits will want harrods or fortnum&mason (anything else just doesn't give the same ride feel). I'm sure the niche-ers will manage to find some boutique bags no-ones ever heard of (I may go with Nash Pharmacy 🙂 )

I wonder if that guy has patented it yet

Plastic bags are made with holes in them

They will wear through and rip easily

You will sweat buckets inside them.........

I don't think he's being entirely serious in suggesting this Peter

Can I use wicker baskets as they are more in keeping with my niche bike?

Ducktape

Only useful for sticking split ducks back together.

Do you clip in first and then apply the bags or cut round your cleats?

I've ridden in wellies one one or two occasions.
Not quite as bad as it sounds.

I'm not sure I'm happy about using plastic bags, they're so un-envoronmentally friendly, even if they are being reused. I would prefer some of those bag-for-life ones, probably the tesco ones with the ladybirds on them. Obviously with some waterproof spray.

I see that CRC are doing a carbon effect plastic bag with cleats already installed.

Well the standard version is for flat pedals, I'm currently working on an spd compatible version but I'm sure it'll be a lot more elaborate than cutting round the cleats...

To reduce the plastic mountain, it's an idea to use compostable bags. Coop used to do them, if that's not to unhipp. Waitrose?

Yes, I simply MUST have a waitrose bag dahling

My feet would probably compost a coop bag before I got home 🙂

I wore plastic bags in that snowy week last winter.
The trick is to wear sock, plastic bag, another sock, then tights over the lot.
That way you can feel perfectly normal while your feet fester in a not quite so awful way as they would, pushing through 6" of slush with ice blocks underneath.

In this mornings commute in in fantastic winds and torrential rain, bearing in mind I have full length mudguards on, I wore my Shimano MT90 boots and full length endura overtrousers. Bearing in mind I was mostly pedalling through an inch of running water for 8 miles, I stuck my walking gaiters on under the trousers and hooked onto the botton lace of my boots, feet were bone dry when I got in.

result

in other news.

you know how seal skins are great until its actually raining, and water runs down your legs and gets stuck in the sock, ( i poured at least a double shot of sock water out of each foot last weekend)

would a wetsuit sock not be better?

wet feet, but warm, and not sloshy.

anyone got any experience of wet suit socks on bikes?
x

Wet suit socks? I bet they'd be even sweatier than carrier bags and stinky. Neoprene over shoes are OK, pretty warm but once water does get in u still get cold tootsies - too much water for the wetsuit effect I guess.

After my last torrential ride, I was contemplating going the whole hog and just wearing a full on wetsuit, with booties, hood and gloves! Anyone tried this?? 😉

I only ever got cold clammy feet, could be due to using cotton socks tho. I use overshoes now for commuting duty, sometimes use them offroad when it's really nasty weather. Bit rubbish for walking in tho.

sealskins with ducktape round the top (or somebody suggested the "sleeve" of a marigold glove as a gaiter - black, or pink to match your niche mentality)

💡 Put socks on, place foot in polly bag then into shoe. Been doing this for years 😉
