... on XT cranksets. How important is it cause mine's broken? Have ordered a new one but is it okay to use for the time being?

My set hasn't got one: it was an older model and, after a bit of research, I understand they didn't come with them anyway

it is a pinch bolt like the top cap on your steerer .... your choice

All it does is preload the bearings, pushing the crank arm on to the bearing before you clamp it up with the pinch bolt. If your cranks are already on and not wobbling then potentially you don't need it - they wouldn't make it out of plastic if it was holding the cranks on.....

Just released I think I might have been talking about something different (I was on about that lttle washer thing that goes in between the 2 pinch bolts)

do you mean the fixing bolt or the little plastic plate that slides into the split in the top of the crank?
if it's the latter then it's not necessary but it ensures that the crank is pushed far enough onto the axle

The little plastic plate thingy. I have managed to put the cranks back on and there is no play so I guess all is good and I can go out to play....
