ATACs

Though my mate runs Shimano 540s on his road & mountain bikes and has few problems in anything short of riding in porridge.

Oh - no one told me. Or my 2-year old Candys I've been using for touring & commuting. Is "instantly" somewhere around the 8,000 mile -9,000 mark then?

My two year old Candys fell apart. I got home, but a new bearing on them, bolted em back together, and they are as good as new. I should have checked the bearings before. ๐Ÿ™‚

The new range is supposed to be better built too, and now has a 5 year warranty. I'd definitely recommend Crank Bros if you want one make for road and MTB.

go with whatever system you prefer to use on your mtb.
road pedal system doesn't really matter if (as I presume) your going to be wearing mtb shoes.

Agreed

this means more TIME pedals.

I had Eggbeaters several years ago. They lasted a couple of years and then fell apart. I liked them though performance wise they were spot on

Also,

I believe the eggbeater series are probably the lightest ones out there, you don't need to spend silly money to get a pedal which doesn't weigh very much, ideal for road, would you be switching pedals between bikes?

+1 as GW says above,
choose for the mountain bike, stuff thats good off road will still 'work' on road,
stuff thats excellent for on road may be carp for off road.
im a big shimano fan, coz their stuff works, and keeps working.
