I want one (yes I do have a wanted ad in the classifieds, thank you for asking). I am lanky and would like a 26" bike with a cromo frame and long reach, mainly for local small jumps and the skate park with the kids. Destroying what's left of my battered joints rather than standing around getting bored seems eminently sensible.
So I'm thinking something around a 2011 single speed Specialized P series bike would fit the bill, anyone got/had one? I have a budget of 200 quid, 250 max so not fortunes. What else should I be keeping an eye out for?
You won't find an actual DJ frame with long reach
a "long" DJ frame is around 420mm reach. and rightly so
Why does in need to be steel?
you'll open up far more options if you also look for Alu frames/bikes
I mean comparatively long by DJ standards, I'm not expecting a Geometron! Just need to fit on it
Doesn't have to be steel, just thought a bit of extra cush would be nice although in reality I expect it makes next to bugger all difference
I had a Specialized P1 from around 2011 or 12. The satin black one with the purple hardware. It looked mint! But, I really didn't like riding it and never got used to it.
It was essentially a 26" bmx. Very short, very twitchy. You know when you stand up to pedal a bmx and you feel like you're going to fall over the handlebars? A bit like that.
Nice bikes though and I'm sure you could get used to it but since you specifically want long reach I'd give it a swerve.
I've currently got a Transition PBJ and it's seen a lot more action. It's got the longest reach I could find at 440mm. It helps that im now surrounded by places to ride it so I'm pretty comfortable on it.
Not sure how often they come up second hand but the Transition always slash the prices of the frames at the end of the model year so ask a dealer what the current price is. I didn't pay anywhere near rrp for mine. I got my x-fusion forks for under 200 as well.

I’m 6’5” and recently built a 26” mess about bike for
similar to what you mentioned.
heart of it is a 17” 26” BFE frame. Makes it feel normal, but also it’s small enough, certainly wouldn’t want to go for a longer ride on it but it was a good recipient for old/worn components and ended up being fairly cheap to build.

Cheers Chief but lovely as that looks I'm after a complete bike for 250. I have a set of flows on Pro 2s, some XT cranks that could go 1x11 and spare brake(s) so an old frame and forks is an option. Just think by the time I've bought frame, forks, chainring, headset, SS tensioner and freehub spacers, sprocket etc it won't be that cheap. I do have a set of old Recons that could be used, QR dropouts though although prob doesn't matter for what I'll be doing
I've done something similar to Lummox.
I had an older BFe frame and some other bits lying about. I fitted a short rigid fork to increase the head angle, Singlespeeded it and added 200 mm discs to the existing brakes. I use it for messing about on in the local Park, at the Skatepark and for practicing my skills innit :o)
Some kind of Dartmoor hardtail frame in a smaller size should do the job then. And an old pair of sturdy forks that are a bit too knackered for general riding but whose rebound damping works ok!

I have an NS Metropolis from erm 2013. It's 4130 steel but it's not like MTB steel, It's a blunt instrument and durability takes priority over compliance. It's not harsh like hi-ten but it doesn't have a wow factor feeling. It's significantly heavier than my size L 27.5+ Whyte 901 for example.
In terms of reach I'm 6'2" 34" IL and even with the 80 mm rise bars angled slightly backwards it feels long enough. The back of the saddle is 10 mm from the tyre so if there's any pedalling to do you kind of get used to riding standing up
I built up a old Ragley Blue Pig single speed with steel rigid forks and it was great as a big BMX/jump bike.
It's currently built up as a spare mtb for the missus but I might change it again....
This wasn't quite the finished article but it was great fun.

I'm 6'1 and ride a size L Bergamont Kiez Dirt with 435mm reach. It takes more muscle than a BMX but can still whip, flip, spin...
6'2 and I also have a L Bergamont Kiez dirt. I can't whip, flip or spin it, but it feels nice
How tall are you? I'm 6'2 and after looking around a bit I figured any DJ bike was going to feel so different from a long mountain bike it wasn't worth worrying about.
Ended up with a 2nd hand DMR sidekick with 24" wheels and love it.
6'3". Mate has a Ragley Marley frame going cheap as he has just bought a very nice DMR Omen, that fits me alright so might go down that route
