Aaargh

Looking at buying a crosser and limited by works ride to work supplier

Most obvious candidate available runs Tektro canti's about which I know nothing

Bike will be used for commuting of course and will poss race it too

Questions are:

Are Tektro canti's any good?
If not what's worth looking at for an immediate upgrade?
Or should I really resist the urge and wait for hydraulic CX discs to mature?

I'm desperate to have a crosser, it's become an obsession, but if its worth waiting I can keep it in my trousers!

Cheers

The CR720s were good for me, probably the best canti brake I've used.

Why wait for hydro discs, though? BB7s are completely ace.

Exactly what Bez said. The discs advantage is that they don't dib into you when carrying like cantis can

I have Tektro cantis on my cross bike, and set up properly they're great. Herself has FSA cantis on her cross bike and they're really, really good.

Got CR520s (I think) on my tourer. If set up properly and you swap the stock pads for something good like koolstop or the triple compound SS pads (which work really well) then they can be really powerful.
Relatively easy to set up too.

Got Tektro Oryx cantis on my CX and they've been good.

Cheap, plenty of stoping power, no maintenance hassles. I like them.

They're great. With cantis it's generally how you set them up that makes the difference and these are more adjustable than others I've used.

BB7s are leagues ahead in terms of stopping power, but if I wanted to race I'd take a lighter bike with canti brakes over a heavier disc-braked all-rounder.

As a wee diversion, Tektro BMX Vs worked very well on mine. Never any mud issues, cable pull matched well with my 105s, and tons more consistency than any canti I've used despite costing peanuts.

Just put some TRP mini V's on my road bike and they are Much better than Canti's and cheap mini V's. They they are the best brakes I have ever used on a road bike including campag shimano et all

Me too, just put on TRP CX 8.4s. The Tektro cantis were fine for pure CX but not up to 'off-road lite' - a mile-long fireroad descent in the rain was a real battle of strength. Not cheap, nor easy to find, but work well with Ultegra levers, very nicely made and more bling than a rapper's wedding.

OK the TRP CX8.4 mini V;s are expensive at £89.99 a set but that is for both brakes which works out cheaper than disc's

Worth every penny in my mind
