I'm running a hope rear hub and freewheel (2nd Hand and I've owned it for about 18 months - it's been good) A few weekends ago shifting went off the boil. I had a look and noticed that the cassette was loose and could rock side to side, so I tightened it up.

Getting ready for riding tomo and I've got bother with the freehub.

Symptoms are:

[*]Freewheeling along a trail - normal function[/*]
[*]Freewheeling as a result of backpedalling (say to avoid pedal strike) causes the chain to go slack and in extreme situations drop between chainstay and tyre. The cassette won't turn 'backwards' so all that happens is that the mech spring lets out what chain it can.[/*]
[*]Looking at it in the workstand there's no doubt that the cassette does not easily rotate, except with the wheel[/*]
[*]If I release the QR squewer a bit then things work better.[/*]

I don't have stuff like the QR done up REALLY TIGHT, just sensible tight, and this hasn't been a problem before.

Any suggestions?

Thanks ๐Ÿ™‚

As above, open it up for a look-see.

Clean, relube and reassemble.

Mind the pawls and springs don't escape when you pull it off.

Why is it that advice sounds like - wear safety glasses and ensure that the the pawl and spring shop is still going to be open after you start working on the hub?

Sounds like one of the bearings may have seized - happened to my Hope XC hub after I'd replaced the bearings and managed to damage one.

LOL, nah you'll be fine, just be careful when you pull it off. And if you're near the fridge - the missing spring is under there now ๐Ÿ˜‰
