Ridiculous deal for these 27mm inner widtg wheels on Superstar at the moment.

Are they any good?

Looking in 29er guise

Well I've had three pairs of the ds25 tech 4 and they are good sturdy, serviceable and reliable wheels.

Not light, but not heavy for what they are. Work great tubeless.

The xx27s will be 2mm wider versions of the same rims.

What price are the ATM? Are they definitely the Switch Ultra hubs and not the Fuel ones?

They're a bit unproven and I've seen some negative comment on here. I also wonder why they're dropping them so soon after introducing them.

But yeah, £120 is secondhand money so why not. They're reasonably good on warranty I think.

Cheapest I got the Tech 4s was about £147, for reference.

I've taken a roll of the dice on a pair of the 650b xx27's for my budget Parkwood build. I'll be able to report back on general build quality/appearance in a few days hopefully (order confirmed & processing at the moment, not yet shipped). I'm not a particularly demanding rider so I'm certain they'll do fine.

I had a pair arrive yesterday, seem to be great for the money. I'll be taping them tonight and fitting tyres ready for BPW at the weekend. They'll be spares for me, so didn't want to spend much cash

First point, they need tape wider than the 27mm I tried as they were losing air through the rim join. Try again tomorrow...

I've got a set on switch hubs, but not ridden then properly yet. Seem good so far, bit heavy but I hope they will be tough.

I used 27mm tape I think and could hear the air escaping from the rim join, but it stopped after the first few rides I guess as the tyre settled and the sealant got in there.

Looking at the weight they might be tad too heavy for me in 29er flavour.

Would the 27mm make the tyre bigger than a 23mm inner as clearance is already fairly tight

A quick update. With wider tape they sealed easily, mine were losing too much air through the rim join for the sealant to do its thing. Hopefully ride them tomorrow

What tape and width did you use? I have a pair to tape up.

To be honest I used Gorilla tape and cut it down as that's what I had. I then put a layer of 27mm tape over the top as reinforcement as gorilla tape is quite thin. I'd go for 30mm tape next time

I have the 23mm version rear as if matches the 23mm width of the Tactic rim I have on the front (i managed to dent the Tactic rear) went for the proven Switch/novatec hub option.
Very pleased so far and it also slackens out my 650b Trance when I put it on the back of that.

I was thinking about a pair of these xx27's to run a 2.4 rear and fatbnimble front, both in 29er.

Probably the ideal size.

But, would the xx27 be too wide for a schwalbe big apple 2.35?

Is there an optimum width for the big apple 2.35 from superstars rims, xx27, ds25, xx23, sentinel...

Apologies for the hijack...

I run 2.3 shwalbes on a Pacenti TL28 set (28mm internal width) and its fine if this helps?

Thanks deviant:)

I found that the big apples were ok on the sentinel rims, unless the tyre pressure got low, at which point I could feel the tyres start to 'roll'...
So i considered a wider rim.
But I didn't want to end up with too 'square' a tyre profile.
Which probly wouldn't matter so much off road with the fatbnimble/ 2.4 rear combo, but I was apprehensive about using the xx27 in combination with the big apples incase the transition from upright to cornering was too abrupt.

So I'll be thinking about getting a pair of xx27's. Missed the xmas time 40 percent off, lol!
