as title - anyone care to comment ?
tapered steerers are now apparently a premium feature and 30-50 quid more expensive
Worth it ? (I'm about 14 stone - oh, and MASSIVELY rad)
Thanks
come on ya barstids, I'm trying to refloat the economy here ! ๐
Don't think it's about being stiffer per se, but using less material for a given stifness and hence being lighter.
if it is a 1.5" to 1 & 1/8" it can not be lighter if it is the same thickness. the weight difference must be tiny
I didn't notice a difference. The price isn't just the initial purchase cost but also the different headset cost.
Definitely a standard 1 1/8th is more adaptable with regard to what frames it can be used on, and If you sell stuff regularly it would be easier to sell on. These were my considerations when I recently bought some.
not noticed any stiffness / steering precision increase in the fork, but the larger headtube / down tube junction is more of a benifit imo...
ah, evening all !
Thanks
My frame would take a tapered fork as it stands - I'm using a "wide" crown race to fit a 1.125 fork currently and have the 1.5 race in the spares box
(I suppose I could use a ๐ angleset easier with a 1.125 too)
Any taper fans want to have a go ?
I run a tapered steerer cos it looks better. ๐ 1 1/8 steerers look a bit odd when fitted on a taper head tube bike, my bike was expensive and i like it to look pimp!
You'll notice it on 160mm+ forks if you are a half decent rider.
I'm still rocking straight 1 1/2 steerers as they give stiffer clamping interface between the steerer and stem. I find that the most noticable, 1 1/8 totems were completely gank compared to my current Lyriks in that regard. It's the reason why Giant has moved to 1 1/2 to 1 1/4 Tapered, for better steering accuracy.
Can't stand 1 1/8 steerers after coming off dual crowns with integrated stems.
SO I'm uessing even bwaarp would say that a 150mm fork that has to have 1.125 at the top may as well be the same all the way up ?
@ scaredypants
I've been toying with the idea of getting a reducer crown so I can stick my big 1 1/8th forks on for the alps - do you just replace the standard crown and bung the fork on the bike? My LBS told me I'd need a reducer headset as well but I feel they may just be mistaken/trying to diddle me...
Cheers!
my giant came with a big race to use a normal fork as well as a thinner race with a bigger bore
I worry a bit that it might fold when I next land a twenty-footer to flat, but o far so good
Cool, think I'll try it - it'll be a lot cheaper than a new fork!
this is mine - obv only guaranteed to fit FSA integrated h/s though
Yep, it's an FSA headset - On One have this which I'm guessing is the same? Unfortunately FSA website is no help, but it's only a few quid to lose if I'm wrong
I felt a difference between tapered and standard Revelations, but not one that made any difference to my riding, so I've happily stuck with standard ones.
what did you feel NW - do tell
(and are you 14stone ish or what ?)
Little bit of fore/aft flexinesss in mine compared with the tapers- I went looking for it, braking hard on good surfaces etc and it was pretty obvious tbh. And when I thought about it while riding more normally, I could feel a little of the same (though it was much less obvious, with all the other stuff going on) but when I just got on with things, it just didn't make any difference to me really. I'm 11 stone fwiw and to be fair, I don't seem to be all that bothered about flex in general, some folks do seem to like everything stiff.
This is kinda cool
F*ck me, I'm never gonna ride my bike agaain after watching that! ๐ฏ
