That new finish Santa Cruz Tallboy aluminium looks the nuts! Almost tempted to flex the credit card

It's a bit heavy though isn't it? Do you think it'll make a huge difference in riding?

not sure what you are riding and how you are riding so can't comment on that but...

when I test rode the Tallboy on the initial 'pick it up in the shop' test I was disappointed by it's weight. When I rode it all that was forgotten - it is one of the fastest bikes I have ridden, and a hell of a lot of fun too.

Currently on a Five. Keeping an eye on the 29er thing though, and the Tallboy seems like the best of the bunch. The carbon one is so damn pricey though

I've done demo rides on a medium and a large alloy Tallboy alu and neither felt heavy when climbing. This is a very quick bike, and I agree it looks great in polished silver.

Heavy for the money, it's hardly a bargain. IMO.

what is the weight? Couldn't see it in the article, only the extra over the carbon one.

I wouldn't worry about it though, spend the money on decent wheels etc

Duh! was right there in plain sight! 6.3lbs. That's alright, worth a few more ounces for something that is built properly with good pivots etc.

Am I going mad or has the link been changed to a STW one?

I want a carbon Highball.....but £1700 is steep for a hardtail frame.

is the weight really that important? once youve thrown your stans rims and other stuff on there i cant think it'll be much over 30lbs...?

It's not going to be any heavier than your Five is it?

What is the weight difference (on average) between a 26 and 29er? I imagine it's mostly in the wheels, can't be THAT different, can it?

we've got a demo alloy Tallboy (Large) if you'd like to try? Not a bike I'd think of as heavy, ours is a fairly basic Deore etc setup too..

29ers do have to carry a bit more weight in the frame generally, unless carbon and even then a little to manage the stiffness in the front triangle that comes with fitting in the bigger wheels. Low standover and higher front due to a2c means the equivalent travel is a touch heavier.

Similarly wheels to match stiffness of 26" need to be a little heavier. Offset by the way they roll to a large extent though unless crazy tech/tricks going off, in which case you're probably not interested in 29 anyway.

IME 30lb doesnt feel it with the bigger wheels on say a 120 bike compare to a 160 26" 150/160 but is almost as capable on most terrain.

My Turner Sultan is the XXL 23" model and certainly built for strength over lightness. It weighs 30lbs all up, so you should be able to get under that with a normal sized 29er.

All 29ers are too heavy. You can always make a 26er that's lighter.

Change the record will you munro.
We all know you don't like 29ers and it's getting a bit repetative now.

I was the first person to ride the 18 Bikes demo Tallboy, felt very very nice indeed, even without the bedding in of forks and shock. I really liked the VPP system, and as above, felt very light when climbing.

I don't the 30lb weight of this bike is a big issue unless you are 8 stone and are climbing alot of hills. The tallboy will probably be not a XC racers favourite but I think it more made for fun than for racing.

You're right bol, it's probably about the same weight as an 18in Five? Will be interested to know what complete weight it comes out at when they build it, depending on which kit they put on. Hopefully some XT for a good comparison with my bike

Agree, it doesn't feel like a heavy bike when you ride it, and certainly won't coming from the Orange 5.

I demoed an LT ally a couple of weeks ago, it didn't feel too heavy at all, especially once you start careering downhill on it. Very, very fast bike.

Not heavy at all, mine is xl, xt + xtr cranks, tubeless on stans crest. 26.5 lbs. great bike. Very capable up and down and mine only has 100mm fox32 forks. Not cheap!

Oh and the point is that the carbon is stupidly light, not the Al heavy....

Exactly. The Tallboy carbon frame is a class-leading weight for a 29er, the alloy version is the same ballpark weight as other full-suss 29er's.

I very much doubt you'll be disappointed, and it does look great in polished alluminium:
