[#6418920]

I currently ride a Genesis Latitude 853 as my only bike, I ride quite a lot of xc, surrey hills and similar type stuff, and I find it's good for both, current build has Reba's, Crests, and just gone 1x10.
However, I really want a Cotic Soul, but part of me thinks it's just too similar to my current bike and I wouldn't really notice any difference apart from my bank balance!
The main advantage of the Soul is I want a dropper and currently have a 27.2 seat tube, so the choice is rather limited.
Anyone ridden both? Are they very similar?

It'll be a different colour.

So you will notice a difference.

I had a Soul and loved it (it was stolen or I'd still have it).

Can you afford the frame? (£500) or the full build? (2k) - are you 'due' a new bike? Do you have a wife who will object to the cash outlay to that level?
Your answers to these questions should determine if you should buy it or not.

Don't change bikes just because of the better choice of dropper posts, in my opinion frames went backwards when builders moved away from 27.2 size seat tubes.
The narrower size looked far nicer and usually rode better due to more comfort/flex.
On hardtails a lot of the time a 30.9 or 31.6 seat tube just makes things harsh at the back end.
There is nothing wrong with 27.2 dropper posts from Tmars, Gravity Dropper etc.

Scratch that itch.
You can get 27.2 droppers btw.

Not going to help either 🙂

Buy the bike your heart tells you. WHen I got back into mountain biking a few years ago I wanted a Swift: loved the look of it, had great reviews and everybody seemed to rave about them. But I bought a Rockhopper to 'save money'. Fast forward a couple of months I test rode a Swift and put a deposit down on the spot.

On the other hand there are 27.2 droppers (if I understood correctly your Latitude takes a 27.2 post?). I've got an RSP one. It has 2 positions, up and down, but frankly that's all I need

I'd say buy the Soul but you want to be talked out of it, right?

If so, don't buy a Soul. Buy a Solaris instead.

🙂

I can afford the frame, as to the wife, she'll be ok, just bought her a nice anniversary present!
Not really changing frames because of the seatpost size, I have been considering a gravity dropper in 27.2, I think I just have that new bike itch, and want to stick with 26" wheels for a while.

Ok, you've talked me into it.
Latitude frame soon to be in the classifieds I think.
If it turns out to be the wrong decision I
can blame you lot!

If you want a Soul, buy a Soul.

Just keep the Latitude until you're sure, they are really very nice.

I had a 456 which I also thought would be too similar to a Soul to bother. Fortunately I had a ride on a soul, was smitten, bought one, still love it.

Get one! I built a soul this week and had my first ride yesterday, chuffed with it, plus its bright orange.
Didnt need another bike really just thought for a while I really wanted one, managed to pick up a great condition mk1 for £120

If I were to get another soul I would get the newer one with the larger diameter seat tube.

I have a lot of post showing on mine and the flex does my head in. Saying that you might like it.

Confidence inspiring on the downs however and a nice frame.

Seat post flex that is... I'm 11 stone and use a thomson post if it matters.

I got rid of a 5 and a rock lobster 853 and got a Soul last year. Superb bike and I don't miss the others at all. Would be curious to try the 650b one but not until the 26 is dead 😛

I love my Mk2 /27.2 Soul so no help here, either.

Droppers? I'm deciding between Thomson or Lev although there are other options. Right now I'm riding the bouncy bike with it's Reverb so not thinking too hard about it/waiting for the early adopters to decide if the 27.2 Thomson is good or bad, but it's going to be a question I'll be looking at more urgently in a couple of months... 🙂

My sane answer is, if you have your heart set on a particular new bike and there's no glaring reason not to do it, then go ahead. It's not like shifting a S/H Soul will be a major worry... Of course this opens up that nasty wheel size can of worms, too.

@FOG, not sure about 456 vs Soul. BFe, maybe...

I rode my Soul exclusively for three years and loved it! It was sidelined earlier this year in favour of a Spitifire (awesome 6" FS) but today it came back out for the Big Dog XC race and we had a blast (despite it being as unXC as it's possible to build up a Soul...) Mine's never had a normal post, Gravity Dropper FTW.

Do not buy a Cotic Soul. They are really bad. It doesn't even have back expension. Being steel, you will attract magnets.
Did that help?

I went from a FS supermarket bike to a Soul and love it
Im hardly slower TBH

But what annoys me is the quality of finish was/is rubbish and for 450 quid I honestly expected better
Especially bearing in mind it was made in the far East with cheap labour and not locally so the price really is a big deal

Not only did the paint rapidly deteriorate but I couldnt read the frame number due to overspray so spoke to the shop I bought it from just in case I ever needed to know it - the party line was all Cotics are like that and few owners ever get to read the frame number so forget it!

I just built up a 456 for a lot less than half the price
Its also made in the far east and the finish is a lot better

Cheers

Erm, you live in the lap of luxury in the west, and the money you'd spend on a Soul, a fraction of that could save the lives of people overseas, so you should do a good deed with a proportion of the money you'd spend buying a building a Soul, and save peoples' lives instead. With having more than one bike already, you're sorted until one gets broken or stolen.

Hope to help.

By overspray, do you mean the paint was too thick to read the number?

Don't buy a Soul, save peoples' lives, and your own soul too...

I'd go for a Bfe. The same, but cheaper and better if you want to go a lot faster downhill or round corners 😀
