Think it's supposed to help with the search function, Troutie

Tags are applied to posts by users. It is supposed to allow for ease of searching. For example if someone tags a thread 'troutlight' then when a user search that thread will come up, as well as clicking the tag will bring up all threads with the same tag.

Also tags can form a cloud which the website admin/designer can feature on the website somewhere to show what people are tagging and allow shortcuts to relevant threads.

However it mostly gets abused on STW.

Tags are picked up very well by google too.

The tags work best when they are repeated, this means that the silly comedy tags don;t really have any effect on searchability.. only the ones that are repeated a lot, which tend to be the most useful, actually have any search benefit really.

Short, single word tags are best. Multiple word tags are next to useless.

I guarantee you people will just use them to add sarcastic tags to posts...

Yes, it's true we can see exactly who posts what tag.

The rule is no tags over three words in length. Abusive tags will be deleted and the poster will get a ban of at least 48 hours. Tags over three words will just get deleted and tag abuse can be reported to us in the same way you would report abuse within a topic.

I sometimes put up tags - content is no more abusive or dodgy than my posts are, just sometimes seems a better way to go

I'm an occasional tagger, use them to group multiple threads on the same topic together. Makes threads easier to find long term, as the searching doesn't always bear great results.
Was very sceptical of it's use @ the beginning but am a believer now.

What does annoy me about the system is classified ad tags, obviously ppl are trying to get the most exposure, but a year later they're of no use on the 'tagged' subject but will still appear.

I hate Elfinsafety. I've never tagged it though, should I start? 😆

Not being funny Fred, but you seem to of reverted to your old persona of late, it seems funny that you should bemoan the cowards, since you have been hiding in various guises on here for the best part of a year.
