[Closed] Tacx replacement jockey wheels. Upper has no play??? 1st world problem.

Proper Shimano upper jockey wheels should have around 1mm of play to assist shifting. These horrible Tacx things don't have any play whatsoever.

Is this how they are supposed to be and did your shifting suffer as a result?

Seems ridiculous for a supposed replacement (allegedly Shimano compatible) jockey wheel not to have this feature.

Haven't tried them on the bike yet, just fitted the upper to a spare mech I had lying around to see if it has any play. It doesn't. 😕

I believe they have thin toothparts to allow some sideways chain moves. You could check this if you have both types to hand.

Don't they have spacers/washers to give a bit of play? They used to when I got some (years ago). Agree that they are horrible, and seem to remember they wear pretty quickly too. You could see that as a bonus

I see. Thanks for that. I'll have a look. 🙂

^^^ They do have the washers but any play is eliminated when you tighten the Allen bolt.

I only bought them as they seemed good value for jockeys with stainless, sealed bearings. Beginning to think they might be pony. 😆

The tacx wheels are the same thickness as the (worn) Shimano ones, where the chain sits on them. 2.5mm measured with a caliper.

Such a basic thing for a manufacturer of an aftermarket part to ignore. Don't even think I'll bother fitting them, if my indexing is going to be affected...

I've got some of these on a 9sp set-up. Shifting is fine and not noticeably different to the original shimano ones.

I had some on a Dura-ace road mech and shifting was fine, smooth spinning and seemed to last for ever.

Just this weekend put some on a XT mech so will see how I go, the ones I have are marked Upper and Lower and the teeth on the Upper ones are noticeable narrower.

£6.99 from Decathlon for the Stainless 10spd ones if anyone wants any.

Seem perfectly fine on my 10sp Saint rear mech. No shifting issue at all.

Ok, thanks for all the replies. Will give them a shot.

I'll check the widths of the top and bottom tacx pulleys. I only compared the shimano and tacx upper pulleys.

I got mine from Decathlon. Seemed like a steal at £7. 🙂

Related post. Ive got some TACX wheels fitted to an M8000 rear mech... have been fine for a few months but all of a sudden have started squeaking quite badly. Ive lubed them but to no avail. Anyone else had a similar problem?

I've always had good results from them myself.

I love it, OP moans about a product he's fitted before he's even ridden it!
