Battered & bruised after riding trying several different settings on my Fox float RP2, I am sick of the harsh pounding I receive after riding over small bumps.
I ride a kona King Kikapu (mainly XC) with a Fox RP2 fitted, I am 12st & have read the manual, watched the vids & tried many different settings, the shock is in mint condition, very light but none of the smoothness of a coil shock.
Question:
I have got hold of a decent Fox Vanilla RC shock unit, 200mm i2i, 50mm stroke with a 650lb spring & it's been TF tuned. I have been well impressed with the smoothness of coil shocks in the past - will it be Ok on the Kikapu? Has anyone else swapped these out before?
Ive never had a Kona but done plenty of swapping between air & coil shocks. If the length & stroke are correct, go on TF's website & check your details on their spring calculator, this will tell you if the spring weight is correct. Then, you'll need the correct mount/reducers to fit your frame. Just be aware of clearance issues; some frames will only accommodate an air shock as coils are generally bigger diameter & may hit something on your frame.
Sounds like you need the compression damping reducing on your air shock. Try a coil if you like, but I'd take the spring calculators with a pinch of salt. Mojo were 200lbs out and TF 100lbs out when I had a coil shock.
