if this thread fairly represents the general attitude of surrey hills riders, its hardly a surprise that the rest of the country thinks the area is full of ATGNI Chelsea tractor driving knob jockeys

So is theere an reliable update on this blokes condidtion? I can't imagine it will be good press if he is badly broken. As for the rest of the thread it seems a monthly occurence for there to be a thread outlining what dicks we regulars to the Surrey Hills are.

So, before I do get banned I'd like to clarify:
1) The Howard thing was a throwaway comment, made much more of by others than by me.
2) I have no problem with kids learning to mountain bike on shared trails.
3) I hope the guy is ok, and rumours of his paralysis are unfounded (which is why they probably should not have been posted).
If that makes me a bad person, so be it.
Just for the sake of balance, Howard once split a pack of skewers for me after I left my rear one on the bin at home when loading the car. This was at 8am on a Sunday. More expensive than Wiggle but very convenient as without it I'd have been going home. I like Howard personally and love the fact the shop is right there. Happy to pay a little more for convenience and keeping his business healthy.
By contrast if you want free work from your LBS I heartily recommend mine. Crown race removed for free, Hopeheadset cack-handed behaviour fixed for free, gears indexed free while they were sorting something else. Only slight problem for SH riders is it's in Luxembourg.

As for pedal and spoke, must have met Howard on a bad day then.
Was over that way with some local friends when what I thought was my BB started to make a horrific grinding noise. As we were passing the shop I popped in for some "friendly" advice as to whether they reckoned it would be ok to continue with or to stop. From 10ft away I was told it would need a strip down but he didnt have time and basically given the cold shoulder, possibly as I wasnt one of his regular SC riding customers.
So given I didnt want to do any further damage I left the others to the rest of the ride and packed up, went home.
On the way back popped into my LBS in haslemere and within 5mins they had identified the problem and fixed it....the rear drop out bolts were loose. Re-greased and set me on my way for free with a smile.
Shame, as now I wont go near P&S even if I was in dire straits and if I wanted in future to buy an SC, I would seek an alternative dealer.
Just shows what having a bad day can do to future custom especially as I was considering a High Ball recently.
Cba with most of this thread, but the guy who stopped with kids in the middle of a fast mountain bike track is in the wrong. You have no duty to slow down around blind corners; you are out to mountain bike not to pass your institute of advanced motorists course.
You will not suddenly just hit a rider in front of you if they are moving (you will have time to stop) and as soon as you stop on a trail it is your duty to remove yourself from that trail.

FFS, this was a thread about an incident involving the air ambulance and then resurrected by someone asking for an update on the riders condition, so all of those people whinging about the price of components or other folk using their private trails **** off and start your own whingathon thread, freakin ****wits!

and pad up fed up of seeing guys getting it wrong at Surrey Hills/Swinley

A demarcated bike path (like Yoghurt Pots) is not a walking or horse path. Slower bikes won't get hit. Stopped bikes have a duty to clear the road.

Unfortunately, right or wrong, people and dogs do walk down these trails.
I don't want to run over either.

On the P&S subject, I have actually had some very good experiences with Howard recently, so maybe I was a little harsh originally. However, you can only judge a shop/person on your experience with them, and mine had been poor at the time.
Riding on the hills is not a trail centre - you need to be able to stop if you need to as anyone can be on the trails. I'm no slouch up there, but have also never come close to mowing someone down - the two things are not mutually exclusive. Kids have every right to be on a tame trail like yoghurt pots as much as anyone. I'll be taking my 7 year out there week after next, as it is a decent training trail for him.

No you don't...agree that you make the area safe for yourself or a 1st aider but if the person is as badly injured as the person being discussed you do not move them, 1st rule of 1st aid. What you do is send someone up the trail to warn/stop other riders whilst making casualty as comfortable as possible and ascertaining whether you need med/emergency services and how you are going to go about doing that.

I think you're getting confused between two discussions here. We're talking about people dawdling along with kids and stood in the middle of a trail around a blind corner on a bike path with many blind corners; not the guy hurt on BKB. Nobody injured; the analogy was supposed to imply that you have a duty to avoid accidents, you can't just stand in the middle of the road and hope nobody drives at the speed limit (which everyone does).

Would you stop at the exit of a blind corner when you know cyclists come down, just because "They should come out of it at a crawl"? That's all I was saying was dumb.
continuity no - you miss the point which is its yor responsibility to ride as if there is an elephant around every corner - ie to be able to control your speed so as not to be a danger to others. If you hit someone standing in the middle of the trail it is always your fault

That's cool; as I said in an earlier post, I thought I remembered it being demarcated. And either way, I wasn't suggesting that it's a legal issue.
