To be bought as a frame, to be used as a winter road/commuter and occasional tourer.

Any reason why not?

I might give this decision making process a bit longer to work through than the last one!

you mean Straggler..? I think, like the Cross Check, you either get it/them or not. Or indeed come round to liking them when you didn't at first..

I've had two Surly frames (Steamroller and Troll) and been massively happy with both. Really well made and thought out, and both frames felt quick and comfortable. Enjoy!

Although, having said that, the Kaffenback is currently only £212.49 (15% off). The Surly is £404 at Triton cycles. Are u worried about budget?!

If it's anything like the non-disc Cross-Check, the forward-exiting horizontal dropouts/semi-horizontal dropouts (or whatever they're calling them now) are a pain when you need the wheel out and your mudguards are a normal fit to the tyre. Happy with my C-C btw, but my mudguards look less than great!

That should read 'Surly Disc Trucker'

Thus rendering every word of my post irrelevant!

Triton are doing them for £340 at the minute. But I'm a little way off yet. After yesterdays purchase I probably need to leave a bit of room before sneaking a new bike into the garage.

I bought mine frame only from Triton. Its awesome. I built it up from bits, and have shuffled and fiddled over the past years. It is now finally pretty perfect.... and is as it comes when you buy a whole bike (apart from mine has hope hubs)

I would give the new Genesis tour de fer some serious consideration, as it is specced well, if not better, for much less money.

I quite want a straggler too tbh, to build up with an alfine hub. Not sure why, as would totally tread on the truckers toes

Loving my Vaya. I've read that the Disc Trucker can feel a bit leaden when unloaded, the Vaya feels quite sprightly without panniers, I wonder how it will feel with. The disc trucker and it's canti predecessor are highly rated touring bikes. It was the most common choice of tourists I've met on the roads in the US. Handling when loaded being very stable. I like too that you can fit a rack more sensibly than on the Vaya with its sloping top tube which requires long rack stays. When the rack top is level your panniers are placed almost behind the rear axle which isn't ideal. With the Trucker you can get them closer to your heels which reduces flex in both the rack and the frame.

I was lucky to find an as good as unused third hand frame. Keep your eyes peeled for frames in sales, I think they are spendy at RRP.

On my Roberts I could get the panniers a little further forward. The idea position I felt was on my old Dave Yates where they were almost forward of the seat stay.

Looks like the Disc Trucker has vertical dropouts (link)

My winter comuter and general hack is a normal non disc long haul and it's been great
Comfy , braze on fitting for anything and every thing

Only thing missing from mine is disc mounts

@Mcmoonter, it was your Vaya thread that started this train of thought.

I must only be 30m from the highlands, there's surely laws against not dissapearing off for at least a few days at a time every now and then?

That does look good value, but I seem to have most of the bits (bar and stem needed) so a frameset makes quite a bit of sense.

They look ace, and Surly's are ace have a look on the Radavist and the Blue Lug Flickr if you have any doubts, way nicer looking than Genesis, on and you can fit proper fat tyres with massive clearance.

Having had a short ride on my new 700x45 Specialized Fat Boy Sports today I can vouch for how much nicer a fat tyre is, just floaty and swooshy and fun!

700c truckers are ace. As stated already, not the most sporty bike unloaded, but that's not the point is it 😉

on my 3rd surly trucker. this one is a disc one. thought about selling it recently, then had a rethink. it does everything a 19 stone ride needs in a bike. toured on it the last 2 years and ridden 7000 miles commuting on it, and a bit of offroad pottering over the last few years.

What's a disc trucker like on bridleways and gentle off road stuff? I'm beginning to resent the lack of clearance for bigger tyres on my Genesis CdF and thinking of building something else up. I've got a Kaffenback 2 for road stuff so don't want anything which would be too similar. vaya looks good but the 2015 frame at Charlie the bikemongers looks a bit spendy for my budget.

I run 700x47 smart sams on mine and it rides really well offroad. You just need to remember the low BB height, but for fire roads and gravel they work well.
