Anyone else's have holes and deformed spots on the edge of the rim? Just wondering whether I've got a dodgy set or if this is just how they make them. Cosmetic quality of the layup is shocking as well.

Just checked our two pairs and there is nothing like you describe on them. They do have a green quality control sticker on them.

Didn't notice anything on the ones I just got and having spent many hours fitting the tyres would like to think I'd have noticed, actually thought pretty good for the price.

Hope you get sorted

I set mine up tubeless last night, taping them up was a flipping nightmare due to the profile of the rim. Ended up having to completely redo the first one and used a couple of wraps of insulation tape to build up over the spoke holes. Apart from one slight leak around the valve they went up pretty easy after that.

Back to the OP though, I did find one small knick on the inside of the bead near to the valve hole on the front, going to keep an eye on it, thankfully superstar are local to me so it's easy to drop them back in for warranty.

Well the wheels are back with them, they were very good initially and sent me a label for postage. However I rang them yesterday to see what was going on and the bloke on the phone was very abrupt and rude.

I ordered these 3 weeks ago andhave a couple of races coming up. Considering all they need to do is either send me another set or issue a refund that is pretty poor. If they don't get me a set in the post today I will be wanting a refund.

Kind of hoping they don't as I'd hate to have to deal with them for any warranty issues!

Just got an email from them stating that they could find no manufacturing defects. They have issued a refund so I'm happy with that but really? The pitting would indicate a poor manufacturing process whilst possibly not affecting performance, but the 4mm bulge on the inside edge, right where the tubeless bead sits? And of course the slack spokes? Without considering that pitting on the surface would suggest voids inside the rim itself

Let's be honest, you'll never get SShitS to admit a manufacturing defect on their products and should take the refund and run off to buy a much better set from Light Bicycle etc.

Consider that a lucky break.

Abigale is running tubes at the moment, hers are next on the agenda for tubeless but going to take them and have the nipples changed for brass as the rear isn't looking good. She had to have the rear spokes tightened at the end of or second week in the Alps as they were very loose. Considering having Kevins set changed and checked before he rides them and will probably go tubeless straight away. At the price we paid they are a bargain anyway so a bit more spent wont go amiss.
It was and still is a worry about the back up service. Hope I don't have to use it.

I've got some pics, can email to anyone interested.

They would probably be fine, and if I knew nothing about composites I probably would have taken their word. alot of people seem to use them and find them great but I couldn't trust them, every ride would have been just alot of wincing!

If anything like that went out the door where I work someone would be for the chop

To be fair to them the rim quality looks as good as my Light Bicycle ones and Abigales have had a lot more abuse than mine and still look as good.

Whats wrong with their service? 4 days for you to notice the problem, contact seller, arrange courier, get a refund?

Seems pretty damn good service to me!

Been running SS Carbon AMs since April this year on my 160 bike. Mine were beautifully manufactured apart from around the valve holes which both had what looked like a v-shaped nick in them and predictably that turned out to be a complete bitch to seal up! I did it in the end by layering up tape around the valve and they've remained extremely reliable since. I did complain and send photos to SS, they said it looked fine.

The spokes, however, were loose and the rear was out of dish.
I paid my LBS to true and tension them up for me and they've been fine since.

SS also supplied the wrong rear axle. I had to buy the right one, couldn't wait for a return / refund. I only found that out after spending a few evenings setting up the tyres tubeless.

Overall I'm happy with the wheels for the money I paid and the extras to get them sorted. I forget they're there when I'm riding.

The bearings and hubs (Switch Ultra) have lasted well so far. I never put a hose near the bike though.

I've raced them at Welsh Enduro Series events this year but I do swap them for alloy wheels for Antur Stiniog more to keep my trail tyres in good nick and wear out a pair of old tyres instead.

However, there's very little difference between the carbon wheels and a proper set of Flow EX on Hope hubs if the Flows have been built right with decent spokes and brass nipples. The alloy wheels have to have been built properly though. A properly tuned Alloy wheel set is fine IMO.

I'll not be rushing to replace the Carbon AMs with Carbon rims unless I can afford a set of Stans Bravo rims which I doubt.

Please don't forget your wheels whilst your riding, this may impair the bike to roll and support the frame.
๐Ÿ˜›

Seriously though, your right Flow Exs are a good alternative to carbon rims built up nice but having gone from Flow Exs to carbon rims with bladed spokes, there was at first a massive noticeable comfy difference and direct power transfer.

Now I forget they are carbon at times and just ride faster.
It's all good!

Nothing wrong with the time it took for that part, the problems are the 3 week cumulative wait, the bad quality of the wheels, the attitide of the customer service guy and the apparent blindness of their warranty department! I'd hate to have to convince them something is broken or faulty outside the 14 day refund period

I'd best not forget my wheels! But I do forget they're there which is to say I don't really go easy on any of them and I don't think "oh no, I'm on Carbon rims, I won't do that drop" or take "that" line.

I take the final field drop at Llangollen DH no problem to a flat landing with the Carbon AMs which is probably the biggest drop I've done. I haven't done the huge drop just above that (probably never will!) but I know the bike/wheels could do it.

You're right with the wheel builds. There can be a substantial loss of power transfer with poor wheel builds and sadly you only get to know that by riding a better build.

I'm racing XC (for a giggle and on a Trail/Enduro bike - they're all I've got) in a few weeks and I was considering using the Carbon AMs but I did a practice run on the good Flow EXs and they're brilliant. I don't know which set to use now! There's really not much in it.

tis 30 days now!

anyway - i just sorted the front wheel out with a tyre and i'm surprised at how p155 easy it was. Wack some tape all the way round, shove the vale through the tape +hole, get the tyre on (which i didn't break all my fingers this time and was dead easy), chuck in some gunk and pump up with my knackered JoeBlow - 5 satisfying pops later and its' all sealed and lovely.

Ref the quality, it may be that mine were built as demo's so the QC had to be spot on as they are perfect, but lets see how they actually ride.

Annoying everyone else's are fine and I got the Friday set, had i not seen all those defects I would have been quite happy with them, they did look good, and 1650g is pretty good for a wheelset that can apparently take some abuse.
