How come superstar angletech BB bearings are easily replaced by any of many choices of 6805 (25x37x7) type bearings from £3-£15, however shimano ones are not easy (one side is very awkward

Designed to be consumable so you buy another one. Like not selling spares for your brakes...

True, but my superstar bb lasted around 40 miles. My shimano one is still good two years and around 2000 miles on.

There is a reason you can change the bearings easily...

on the flip side the last shimano one that was fitted on one of our bikes lasted 3 months before disintegrating. The hope ones I have which have easily replaceable bearings are lasting years.

And the price / longevity difference between the superstar / shimano / hope ones may be related to price?

True, but my superstar bb lasted around 40 miles.

That many? I've had one die in less than that!

Shimano BB's don't last a huge amount of time either, but significantly longer than Superstar.

For a MUCH better product than either, but not significantly more expensive, try out the Praxis Works BB. They're £30, but bearings and seals are sooooooo much better than Shimano! Or there's always a fully servicable BB, like Hope...

Gnash, that was only a small part of my original post but I was trying to do it on my phone with fat fingers and got timed out.
My point is that I can choose to put whatever bearings I want into my Superstar cups from cheapos to SKF or other high quality bearings easily, the cup is well designed and incorporates seals external to the bearings own ones. So I vote for superstar.
