I rode a superfly a couple of years back. It rode nice but found the steering quite slow. Rode it 6 times and then the frame cracked I the middle of the top tube. Trek refused a warranty stating the frame had received a heavy front wheel impact. To put it mildly, I was unimpressed. The cube I rode last year was better. Now riding a Cannondale Flash 29, and it is beyond doubt the best bike I have ridden. I really recommend you try one

Had I not have gotten such a good deal on my Cannondale I would have most likely gone for the 1*11 Superfly model. I had a Trek before and had excellent service form them.

Njee seems to rate his very highly and even has to tether it down in high winds.

Haha, yep, damn thing flies away given half a chance! 19.2lbs with SIDs, XX1, LB wheels etc. it's the heavier frame too. I'm suitably impressed. It's quicker than any of the 26" bikes I've had, up or down!

I got one a few month's ago and I am really enjoying it. Climbs well but still plenty stable on the downhills.

Only one problem, a bit of unrest in the bike she - my other mountain bikes have hardly been out since I got it and they are not happy.

I'd have 1x11 every time. Never found myself lacking gears.

11 speed is way more expensive, I'd just change chains more often!

Njee does love his and got great service from trek. I on the other hand did not. How about ex team Cannondale flash 29 team, xx1, full carbon lefty, carbon wheels, 18.4lb. £2350 ono. Immac condition (gotta try haven't I).

It should be borne in mind njee is a racer and rather fast from what I know.

For all round riding I'd stick with 2x10 if you have any hills, plus you'll have greater room for economy decisions on chains, cassettes etc.

I had a go on one of these it was light and quick but the riding position didnt work for me. Went for a cannondale f29 which just felt right from the off.

If you were interested in Ernie's Cannondale I can vouch for the condition, I'd be tempted if I wasn't a short arse!

Whythankyou! 1x11 is far less of a compromise than 1x10 - you do lose a tiny bit off each end compared to 2x10, but it's less than one gear each end.

ernie thanks for the offer, but ideally id like to buy new,i am planning on having a look at the cannondale this week at big bear bikes.

njee, most of my riding is mainly xc around wakefeild/leeds/west yorkshire ,with trip off to dalby/gisburn etc once a month.
would you recommend the superfly for this?

thanks

My wife has just got a Carbon Superfly, 27.5 as she's only little, for xc racing next year. Only had it a month but seems to more than up to the job, been round Dalby Cup Course as fast as she's ever done and comments on how well it handles and surprisingly comfy. Not had any issues on long day rides either, 5-6 hrs in the saddle with no problems. New bike syndrome I know but has a turner flux as well that hasn't seen much use since.

Different end of the country to me, and the majority of my experience comes from other race focused XC bikes, but I find the Superfly excellent, it's quicker up and down than any of the 26" FS bikes that preceded it. I imagine it would be perfect for stuff like Dalby, if you're looking for something fairly quick!

I've the carbon 2x10xt version from a few years ago. It's bloody fast. I rinsed my times on most segments around Cannock last year compared to my 26 FS (rm element so no slouch). I love it and if push came to shove would be the bike I keep.

ive just taken the loan bike out, found it very light and quick.
the steering is very twitchy downhill and this led me to go OTB resulting in snapped gear cables and a buckled front wheel.is this normal for this kind of bike?i wasnt going over fast and it wasnt very steep, ive also ridden this route plenty of times with no problems

Oh dear, could be riding a new and unfamiliar bike - also remember the head angle on XC bikes is a tad steeper, resulting in faster steering.

I found it to twitchy for me id imagine changing bars stem etc could help but the f29 was right out of the box.

The superfly is one of the slacker race orientated frames. What are you used to riding ?

Can't say I find mine at all twitchy, did it have a very short stem or anything? It's a race bike at the end of the day, so not really designed for 50mm stems as are de rigeur on more trail orientated bikes.

Mine's got a 90mm, with a 710mm flat bar, and I find it fine, but used that sort of bike.

IMO they (like most racey 29ers) also benefit from a lower front end - positive rise stems and spacers leave too little weight on the front and make it prone to washing out. Found it much more confidence inspiring with an inverted stem.

I found it to twitchy for me id imagine changing bars stem etc could help but the f29 was right out of the box.

The Superfly has a 69 degree HA, whilst the F29 is 71 degrees, and you found the Superfly twitchy...?

Who knows could be down to the bar stem combo that was fitted fork pressures or seat position. Could even just be me and my wierd shapped body 🙂
