Anyone used one of these ? how did you get on?
Can you only get them from Hong/Kong China at the minute?
Cheers
Looking to go 1x9 on the cheap 🙂
Ordered one last week from Hong Kong via eBay. Should arrive middle of March apparently. A change from a 11-32 on my cross/commuting bike to go with a 40t narrow wide.
Interested to know too as I'm thinking of getting one. Bit of a jump at the top end of the cassette but nothing me or the mech can't handle (I hope!).
11-40 with 32T chainring , or 11-36 with 30T chainring?
That's where I'm undecided too - I can get the 11-36 cassette here in UK but means I need to buy a new 30T ring or wait for the cassette and try it with existing ring and chain device
I had an 11-40 on something a while ago, can't remember what, I think it might have been a Flare. It was fine with a SRAM X7 mech. I tend to stay out of the panic gears and stand up/gurn/prolapse/cough up a lung so didn't really notice the jumps at the bottom but the big cog came in handy getting up the side of Hawthorn Quarry (only the second time I've managed to ride up it, first time in the wet too!)
I'm sort of interested as my Bridalslayer is 1x9 with an 11-32 Cassette, I was half toying with going to 11-34 or 11-36 already...
The only real issues I can see is that it will either have big steps throughout the range or else it'll be more like a 7 speed 11-28 with a 34 and a 40t cobbled on the end, and of course 9 speed mech limitations, I bought a cheapo road link knock off from HK a few months back for less than £2 (IIRC) but I've not yet have a chance to try it out so this might be an opportunity...
Thinking about it something like an 11-38 might make better sense in 9 speed, a bit more range but maybe less big leaps between gears and perhaps more attainable for an old 9 speed mech...
Bob Elliot & Co is now distributing them here. Have a look at their website and find your nearest retailer who can order it for you.
The problem with those is that they re-introduce the really annoying 15T-18T gap in the cassette that was eliminated when 9 speed was introduced!! ie: the 8speed 11-32T block had this gap, and the 9speed 11-32T smoothed it out.
The gaps at the low end (28-34-40) also look pretty big, but 28-34 is only another couple of teeth as a gap so may be ok.
I've ordered one from China as a punt, will report back once it's had an outing
Ordered the cassettes from Ali Express and it arrived within 10 days. Fitted it today along with a 30t Clarks NW I got off eBay for ,,£17 total cost £40. Quick spin up lane and I can live with the gaps and shifting is fine with a standard slx rear mech and the old part work chain.
Will report back once it gets a proper test
Interested in this thread still, but now I'm part way through a build for my eldest for which I'm toying with the CSM680 (11-40: 8 speed) as it can be had for just £20...
It has the same 28/34/40 low end, I'm just wondering how well will those steps work for a "sit and spin" type nine year old?
26 or 24 wheel ?
24" but it will be a 1x8 Drivetrain, the frame lacks routing for a front mech and she'd probably not get along with it if it did...
32-40 should be plenty low enough for her.
Gaps will be bigger on the 8 speed block. How about 11-36 with a 30t front ring. That Clarks one I bought was for a 104bcd chainset.
If her use of the gearing on her 20" bike is any guide, she'll use the top spinney end more and the gaps between the top three ratios are the same on 8 speed as the 9 speed, I don't think she'd ever use the 11t TBH.
30-36 will produce a similar ratio to 32-40 but I already have a 32t chainring going spare so the 11-40 cassette would actually work out cheaper and should she need to go even lower I could still buy a 30t chainring...
11-32 would give the same low gear as her 20" bike currently has, but I think she needs some lower range to get her climbing a bit more...
Post ride report. So after 13 miles full of mud and rocks I can say that the cassette and Chainring worked perfectly. Didn't mind the gaps in the ratios and didn't really need a lower gear so all good. 🙂
