[#13534962]

Hi, so I'm looking to replace my MTB frame which is currently a 2012 On one Scandal, which as you might suspect has very outdated geometry.

However as I don't ride MTB all that often these days and because I'm not that rich, I don't really want to spend a great deal of money on this. The plan is hopefully to find a frame that's a few years more modern in geometry, will take an angleset headset to slacken the head angle a little but will still accommodate my old wheels with 135mm qr dropouts and take a 100mm fork, threaded bottom bracket also required.

I did recently just miss out on an Orange Clockwork 100 on eBay which looks as though it would fit most of the criteria that I'm looking for, but there must be others out there.

So any suggestions for frames to set up notifications for on eBay? I've put a wanted ad up in the classifieds on here but I am a little wary of scammers given some of the stories on here of late. Size large if anyone was going to check the ad 😉

Thanks.

What wheel size?

I always liked the On One 45650b (I've had two if them, not at the same time!), but they're more geared for a 140mm fork.

So, an Inbred maybe (in 26/29 depending on wheel size)?

Cotic Solaris?

depending on what rear hub you have you might be able to convert it to wider spacing

A boost rear wheel would give you a load more choice and can be had for not much money new/second hand

Mk 2 Cotic Solaris would be my pick for a QR rear end. But I reckon buying a new rear wheel would be better. Doesn't have to be expensive. Boost kits are available if you can change the end caps/axle. Boost kist for the front wheel cost less than a tenner.

What wheels do you have?

Okay, so 29" wheels. My current wheels are some On one/Nukeproof hubs built on to some cheap DT Swiss rims, also from 2012, I think spares are going to be hard to come by.

I'm not going to go down the new wheels path, so many opportunities for mission creep 😂 and the budget really isn't that great anyway.

Early Cotic Solaris is a good shout I'll have to go and do some research on the geometry.

My (sadly nicked) orange clockwork was ace. A new frame from sunset with most of a build kit from my cove stiffee.

135mm rear end, -2 angle set.

Mine was a 27.5 frame with 26 wheels

150mm forks instead of the 120 it should have had with 27.5 wheels.

The BB was a bit low with a 44 tooth triple. Swapping it for a 34 tooth had me up all the hills round here and was nippy enough on the dh.

Where are you based Bazz?

if it’s use in opening up opportunities I have a rear novatech  hub / wtb rimmed 29 rear, the freehub died and then Brexit hit and they stopped shipping to the uk for a bit so never replaced it and brought a new bike. Free if any use

Vitus. Nucleus or Sentier. Both great.

I have a 2017 On one Deedar that I'm putting up for sale. Complete bike for not much money if you're interested.

+1 on the Vitus

I got my eldest a 650b Nucleus off ebay for £150 , was really impressed how well it rode, geo is spot on and even the suntour air forks were surprisingly capable

frame is nice, with sensible cable routing and geo is spot on

good one here

Some great replies there, thank you.

@dropoff thanks, but that isn't really my sort of bike.

@superstu again thanks, but I'm happy with what I've got and rather you gave it to someone who really needs it.

Vitus Sentier is out as again too much travel and through axle rear.

Vitus Nucleus however, looks good, however the headtube looks as though it's tapered and my fork has a 1 1/8" straight steerer, I assume in this day and age a headset is available that would allow the use of a straight steerer in a tapered headtube?

BFe 275?

Mine is being used for holding spare parts, and is available for £125 collected. Can run 100-160mm tapered fork, it's QR back end and threaded

^ that plus a 1.5" lower headset to suit whatever the head tube style is at the bottom. Fairly sure there'll be cheaper non-Hope options.

I'll echo the recommendation for a MK2 Solaris. I have one that I still ride and enjoy (amongst newer bikes). Probably best with a 120mm fork, but still a great bike whatever. Should be cheap enough too... I was actually gifted mine 🙂

This is a Vitus Sentier I built up from a cheap eBay frame for a mate. He really likes it.

I always feel like a HT should have a bit of joie de vivre about them looks wise - I can cope with moulded carbon a soul-less FS a bit more.

The Vitus doesn't fulfill that for me tbh - you may not give a shiny one and that's fair enough. I guess that's maybe why On One bikes never really did it for me though. That said I have a white aluminium Ragley as my main HT, so maybe my opinion counts for nothing and I'm just rambling nonsense
