I'm starting to worry about how long my Hemlock has left in it (lots of creaking despite new bearings, the rear wheel keeps falling out - though I don't think that's the frame to be fair) so starting to think about replacing.
Budget of about £500 max (second handis fine!), long low and slack, 26" and will take a 160mm ish fork.
Any ideas?
how about a new rear QR instead?
about £495 cheaper than a new frame...
Ti456 if you don't mind a change. You could buy mine when I sort out my next bike (it's the once a decade new bike event for me coming up!) 🙂
Just bought an Ellsworth Moment. It is phenomenal!!!

Just bought a new QR (actually a 10 mm bolt up) but it's done it with a couple of QRs and one bolt up too. Really I just fancy a change (there's probably nothing wrong with it at all).
Not sure I fancy a hardtail, I already have an Inbred for that. I should've specified *some* rear travel.
See I hear good things about Ellsworths, but they're, erm... How do I put this nicely to a gent who's just bought one? They're not my taste stylistically.
Can you find a s/h Rocket?
I would say a Banshee Spitfire if you can find one at that price.
Maybe a Transition Covert?
I would bloody love a Rocket, but I can't see one turning up in budget. Spitfire is definitely a good shout if I see one, am I right in thinking they can be converted to 650b? Covert a possibility too, or maybe a Bandit.

Try owning a Dare, they're flippin fast, but they have to be, if anyone actually saw you as anything other than a speedy blur riding past they'd be sick on the spot.
There's a LOT of options in the 2nd hand market for that budget without being more specific about what you like, and it's getting hard to buy a 'bad' bike now, sure you can get something that doesn't suit your riding style, but it's unlikely to be intrinsically 'bad' so maybe time to just start perusing eBay and Classifieds to see if anything takes your fancy first and then try and get a ride on one or two to see what you think?

Yes - change dropouts (or you can run the same dropouts depending on tyres). Lots of talk about it on mtbr.
Personally I would only look at the V2 Spitfires (with bearings) even though there are a few V1s in your budget about.
@amedias - yup that's pretty much what I'm doing, just keeping an eye out. Not in any hurry to buy, but also a little bit bored at work so I thought I'd ask and see if there was anything obvious I was missing.
As to more specifics - Well long low and slack, not too heavy, fun to play on (the Hemlock is only 120 mm at the back which seems to make it feel a bit more "involved" than longer travel bikes I've had) and something with a bolt through rear end would be nice, though that's not a deal breaker. I quite like the Horst link suspension I currently have, but then I liked the single pivot bikes I've had before. Plenty of mud clearance and something that's not too bad on bearings.
2nd hand Intense Tracer2 frame? You can also get rear plates to change to 650b so future proof. Theres one on pinkbike for sale (pictured as a frame only) that I had been umming and arring over before I went with a new Commencal.
In fact the more I think about it, there are lots of good options.
SB66, Nukeproof mega (one here for eg)
SB66 looks a bit expensive (sadly) but those Megas look like a good deal, one sold not long ago with a CCDB for less than £500!
Looks like sticking to my obsolete wheel size might be the way to go.
Commencal meta V4 frame £720 without shock. Im running 26er wheels until I can afford a new rim build.
What shock size is the hemlock? 200x57 and you are laughing.
Pretty sure it's 200x57 actually, and the shock wasn't that long since serviced. Where was the Commencal from?
For £500 you won't find a frame that's more fun to ride than the 456 Carbon Evo.
If I was ever told it was one bike only it would be that one, no question.
5yr warranty:

and bikeradar's trailbike of the year
Interesting. Will have to see how the shock tune compares and whether I'll need to get it re tuned.
Ooh, the V3 is the same price with a shock... Also tempting.
But the V4 is lighter and better? (as a trail bike)
Interms of retuning- I bet all it'd need is a different compression spacer. If it really does need owt though.

Smidge over, but try haggling....

Aye I saw that Liteville, looks awesome and I could use most if not all of my old bits straight off too. Not as slack as I'd go for, but I guess if that bothers me I can always stick a slackset on there.
Hmm. Decisions!
Mondraker Dune?
Do you want to buy a less-used, medium Hemlock? 😉 Bargin. No major frame component's had more than 2 years use.
(actually, jokes aside, if yours is a 1.5 headtube, large one, I'd be interested in taking it off you even if you think it might be shagged- always wanted to try the longer front end...)
My carbon Santa Cruz Blur LTc?
Would want £700 though.
large, they are fairly compact for a large though.
My Hemlock's a standard headtube and a medium so no use to you I'm afraid Mr Northwind. I think if I could put an angleset in I'd be more inclined to keep it, but I've had a play on some slack modern bikes and I fancy a change.
Thanks for the offer coolhandluke 😉 but I'm not a huge fan of (older) Santa Cruz geometry, I had a 2007ish Heckler a while back and I found it too short in the TT and too long in the ST, plus a wee bit steep.
I have been looking for something similar for a while.
You're looking at:
£800-1k - SB66, Blur TRC/LTC, Carbon Devincis, Banshee Rune/Spitfire,
6-800 - Pricer Tracer2's, Stumpy Evo Carbons, Coverts, Expensive Commencals / Mondrakers / lappierres, yeti 575s
4-600 - Cheaper Tracer2's, Reigns, Stumpjumper EVO Alloy, Megas, Cheap Commencals / Mondrakers / Lappierres, Alloy Devincis (real winner here i think)
Up to 400 - Cheap Reigns, Trances, Camber Alloys.
In the end I went mega budget cheap and bought an element 26, anglesetted it to 67 degrees and spent the rest on petrol.
Ha, what I should probably do is just ride the Hemlock until something actually breaks then worry about what to do next. But I like idle conjecture.
