A Whyte 901 isn't too far over your budget and looks amazing. Maybe you could find one on offer somewhere?
Saracen Mantra looks very good and it's cheap!
The Ramin 5 looks great; I ride a 2014 Ramin 4 (it's only on 100mm) on some pretty demanding trails overseas and its been great. It gets one hell of a hammering and I reckon with the extra 20mm and Reba vs Recon, It'd be a winner!
I'm going to get either the 5 or 6 hopefully when my CTW scheme comes round again; I'm very impressed.

I just bought a Cannondale Flash 29er 1 2013 on a cycle to work scheme via Paul's Cycles. They sell a lot of 'last years' models with large discounts. Take a look at the Bird Zero 3. Just bought a Zero 1 in blue. Stunning bike and great spec for money. Pretty burly build too. Think the zero 3 is £995
