[#7199828]

I am currently in whistler for the summer. and if you havnt visited then you cannot imagine the way it rips your bike to pieces. i have done 5 years worth of repairs and maintenance in 2 months. with that in mind im considering going singlespeed on my dh bike. you dont really pedal much in the bike park anyway. i have had SS hardtails before but i know that DH bikes have chain growth and other things of that nature and so didnt know if it would really work? have seen some people with it. im riding a canyon torque with cane creek db coil if that makes a difference.

any tips appreciated. cheers.

If you've seen other people on them then maybe they work?

Use an old mech as a tensioner.

Chainless - it worked well for Gwin.

I used a Rohloff DH tensioner to SS my Giant.

make sure you try it with no air int he shock to ensure there's sufficient chain growth/tensioner movement available.

I've done it with a bodged light bracket, jockey wheel and standard tensioner, with an old rear mech and with a superstar zinger tensioner.

All worked well but were a bit of a compromise

What you need is a DMR Bolt, tough as old boots and the pivot is concentric with the bottom bracket.

There are loads of bb pivot bikes, I had the Commercial meta sx. The dropouts weren't long enough to take up the slack in the chain. The Bolt is nice but only available in very limited sizes and a weighty beast

thanks for replies. i will just try and bodge it as per usual. sure i can get something to work with an old mech/tensioner type thing.

Or there's: http://www.yesspro.com/product/etrd-full-suspension-chain-tensioner/

Not cheap and no idea if worth it.

cheers for that. that is tempting. not cheap but still much cheaper than another new mech!

Just use an old rear mech, thread a brake or gear cable through, pull it through until the stop end is where the cable would enter the mech, position the mech and clamp the cable on the pinch bolt.

Paul Melvin chain tensioner will take up more than enough slack 20T, I think. It's basically a rigid RD. An old RD will work just as well.

Djtc that's how you also bodge a mech to get you home after you mangle something
