Collective noun for a large group of mtb ers anyone?
Surely it's a 'chain' of MTB'ers ๐

thanks Danny & Johnny, I'll be in touch closer to the day ๐
Surely it's a 'chain' of MTB'ers
I like 'throng' but perhaps 'pong' would be more accurate ?
A lift with Danny what could possibly go wrong ๐

A puncture ?
I do a lot of shouting and bossing around and everyone lets me :o)
Not if Ton's coming you don't!

Weekly bump!!
(in case anyone missed it)

liking yer thinking Ton, liking yer thinking......
couple of lbs less to push up that ruddy gurt hill ๐ ๐

Surely correct training for ssuk would involve getting tanked up the night before?
I may well be able to make this. Will be bringing my stepdad, who is reasonably fit and has volunteered to ride the SS ๐ How long will it take to drive to the start point from Glenridding?
Been looking forward to riding up north for ages, this sounds ideal. I'll be bringing cake to appease the northern hoardes... Riding skills likely to remain rooted firmly in the south ๐
Might be able to come - checking the diary as I type (well, will be in mo!)
Count me in. It's about time I did a STW ride. Especially seeing as I've never ridden around there anyway.
I'll try and persuade a friend along as well. ๐
How long will it take to drive to the start point from Glenridding?
I'd allow about an hour - quicker to go north and join the M6 at Penrith I think.
Looking fwd to this.
about 5 of us going.
I bet those hills have never seen as many folk
not even when the boggies desecrated them ...the tribe of heartless footpath reckers with their countryside recking mountain destroying leader
PS dave that makes about 15 from chorley area alone Rivvy will be quiet that weekend.
Past experience has shown the initial enthusiasm for these rides always exceeds the actual number who turn up, but in this case, jesus, I've lost count of how many there are.
As per usual, I'll post a roll call thread up the week before to get more accurate numbers.
the tribe of heartless footpath reckers with their countryside recking mountain destroying leader
who shall have scant opportunity for transgression as the route is all bridleways (or road) ๐
I'm sure there must be some scope for a little bit of 'cheekiness' Simon

I always cheek my youngers (ie almost everyone)
Past experience has shown the initial enthusiasm for these rides always exceeds the actual number who turn up
It only happened once ๐ณ
Anyone have gpx of the route?
Dont give it to him. He wont come if he see's it.
Can't make it as it clashes with the last brownbacks race which I have now entered, hopefully I will make one of these rides soon!
I'm all prepared for the climb, I've been regularly pushing my 47lb DH bike uphill recently, got to help with this big push/walk
I'm all prepared for the climb
it's quite simple -
1) locate the totty with the best arse
2) follow :o)
simon, from experience, yes that does work ๐
all in the best possible taste, obviously! No drooling or pawing, and at a discreet distance...
...or there's the Veela option:
1) locate the cutest totty
2) ride a little way in front displaying your skillz
Now all this talk of totty is tempting me to join up..
Room for another one (at the back)?

It's a fantasy - there'll just be hordes of middleaged gutbuckets coughing their lungs out ๐
Worried now considering a haircut in case of mistaken identy.

I hope you won't take offense Johnny if I say no one could mistake you for lissome totty...

LOL - But I'm not middle aged* yet! Tho admittedly coughing my lungs up is a distinct possibility.
*according to wikipedia, my knees say different tho.
But I'm not middle aged* yet!
not denying 'gutbucket' though I notice...
Getting closer now!
I am not coming but I was just looking at the route and wonderring .....
From Newbiggin there appears to be a track running south up to Randgill Top.
Is that rideable and then could you drop down onto the outgoing path or drop down eastwards onto that other bridleway .
Interestingly according to streetmap the 1:50,000 shows the route mostly as bridleway while 1:25,000 has it as a footpath.
MadBillMcMad
The track you mention is very boggy in places, only good to ride after a hard frost, or very long dry spell.
It disappears into tussocky grass in places, and its not really a viable route imho.
Just looked at the boggies map....................this is goinna be hard
hard can be good :o)
I'm planning on doing your Dunnerdale loop this saturday as a bit of practice.
This Calf ride, although the start looks tough, the downhill looks nice and long
Room for another one (at the back)?
Def, be good to see you again, plus I hear its 7 miles on downhill, should make those Pikes earn their money
Roughly how long in the saddle?
the fastest we've ever done it was 5h15m when frozen. I'd allow a minimum of 6 hours
A nice slow pace or is that pegging-it-6hours? ๐ฎ
Plus any bailout points?
A nice slow pace or is that pegging-it-6hours?
given all the recent rain I'd say 6 hours-pegging-it ๐
Plus any bailout points?
1) at the north end of Bowderdale one could turn west and take the road back to Sedbergh (rather dull though)
2) at Handley's Bridge (near Murthwaite) you could join the A683 back to Sed.
neither bailout is any shorter than the main route, just easier tarmac
