Forum password has now arrived so I can at last say thanks to lots of people - firstly for a fantastic route on an amazing day and great company, secondly for everyone who helped me out post crash!
John - first aid and cake, Danny - inappropriate but entertaining comments, ton - fixing my grips, Marin-John - taking photos (and maybe feeding me jelly babies?), the guys who offered me schnapps and whiskey, the guys who made me tea, Faz - for not shouting at me for taking him out as well (are you ok?), the vortex crew for good banter, Tom for sitting with me in A&E for 4 hours and of course the farmer for the lift back to the car park (not that he's likely to read this, but good vibes to the gentleman).
Just a bit gutted cause the two holes in the knee are the least of my problems, think I might be out for a while with a bit of ligament trouble (only just fixed the right one that I did in the alps last summer) 👿 but fingers crossed its just bruising 😕
Oh, and can I just reassure you all that I will not be suing any of you. Not only am I a regular rider (i.e. not a novice just because I'm a girl!)but it was no fault of the ride organisers that I made a mistake on a bit of loose, fast stuff. I understand and appreciate the principle of what the other anti-mass-ride thread is saying, but I went into this ride knowing what sort of thing to expect, and surely doing a new route in the wilerness is safer with other people that have done it before than me navving it on my own?!
Anyway, great day, great photos. See you all again (hopefully) soon!
simon, and dave, brilliant photos boys............ 😀
I shall be writing to the farmer to thank him 🙂
Tom for sitting with me in A&E for 4 hours
that's why I offered to bring you some reading matter as I know it often takes quite a while there! Sorry to hear you had less obvious injuries - hope they mend quickly...
Any excuse to sit at home and soak up the sun eh Joe.
How was the paella that Tom made last night?
You do realise that you could milk this for quite a while and have him wait on you hand and foot.
Thanks Simon, I'd thought of doing the same but not sure of the address. He also mentioned he was only staying in the cottage there short-term as he'd just bought a farm down the road.
Paella was good thanks, and I've got leftovers in a pot in the fridge for lunch today 😀
Actually really bored though already...can't move much!
Cracking pics lads

I'll post the letter at lunch/dinner time!
Interesting that Deejay chose to post a shot of me on my arse rather than the lovely scenery or shapely totty
Good laugh though 😆
Jo - hope you have no long term damage and can come out and play again soon. (and get to drink your tea standing up!)
Simon, what a sensible way to cool down on such a hot day . . . .

after the initial shock it was quite pleasant :o) Twice.
simon you really cant be gettng any as your definition of pouting totty is worryingly broad.
Great Pics Lads... good effort.
I've uploaded the rest of my pics now:

Thanks for your concern Johnnie but you misunderstand my motives :o) ...and I would have described you as worryingly skinny! You should be scoffing more of that cake yourself buddy:-)
PS If anyone objects to shots of themselves (or the captions) just email me and I'll take them down or edit as required. For those I don't have the names of you can add a comment with your name...
I object to my mugshot on account that I look like a berk (I think I had some flapjack stuck in my teeth I was trying surreptitiously to remove - nice!)
Cue a flood of "the camera never lies" comments 🙂
I like the wall pattern pic Simon, specially with the teeny tiny horses in the foreground.
Some cracking shots there Danny especially the "looking back" ones.
Yes I think it's the inevitibility of (yet more) dampness for the cameraman about it that is so captivating 🙂

I think the possibility of soaking me acts as an incentive for the riders to try harder :o)
the guys who offered me schnapps and whiskey,
That HAS to be Mr Richpenny and Singlespeed Stepdad! Sorry you fell off and got hurt, glad there were folk around to give 1st aid and help.
This ride looks excellent, and everyone's photos are so good!
Oh, Tony, how's your thumb ? (he fell off and twisted it)
I got a bit confused on Danny's pics when it got all cloudy till I realised I'd strayed into a different day 🙂
BTW SFB, if you're interested in IDing everyone.... pic 99 in your gallery is richpenny, also (LOVELY photo) the one called pleased to be near the top (or something)

cheers Anna 🙂
Interested in this route as (by chance) we ended up camping outside Sedburgh from Sunday to yesterday - I didn't have a bike with me but looking out of my tent up Brant Fell I was sorely tempted to go back and get one.
How would this route be going the other way round? Looking at the map I think I'd prefer the long drag up Bowderdale then the steeper fun down Brant Fell. But that's just based on looking at the maps and I've been in this game long enough to know that the maps aren't everything.
A few people there on sunday normally do it the other way round, while I haven't tried it myself I'd say the way we did it was better. Steep climb but its grassy and not very technical (so not loads of fun going down I'd have thought) and all together not too bad(for a bloody great climb), specially in nice weather, then a looooong twisty singletrack downhill for 5 miles!
EDIT: Sorry you said Brant fell, I've no idea what thats like.
If you're camping in Sedbergh you can go up the way we went and down either Bram Rigg or White Fell (which run roughly parallel). Both give about 450m uninterrupted steep grassy downhills with scattered rocks and a few dropoffs/jumps. This can be done in a little over 2 hours.
How would this route be going the other way round?
Until Sunday I have always done this route 'the other way' - starting off from Ravenstonedale. The Bowderdale section is good either way - however I don't think its 5 miles of downhill - if anything its a gentle down from Ravenstonedale taking you to the bottom of the climb - ie going UP the way we did it. The descent from The Calf into Sedbergh (the climb on Sunday) is a BLAST - very, very fast.
The decider for me was the second section from Ravenstonedale back to Sedbergh - once you get the tarmac out of the way the offroad section is much better this way - especially the bit through Murthwaite.
So decision made - the way we did it on Sunday is best for that route - I just need to work out another route going up Bowderdale and down White Fell - simple!
My pref is the opposite(wrong?)way.
Coming from the North I park @ Tebay, ride along the road and then BW to the farm at the end of Bowderdale.
Then up Bowderdale and down Calf(from trig point) to the road. Somtimes go for coffee and cake but otherwise usually head back towards Tebay but then cross over/under the M6 and head out and round Borrowdale Valley back to Tebay.
Misses out that stinky farm track between Sedburgh and Ravenstonedale.
I would imagine that due to ongoing erosion that the Bowderdale "track" will become quite difficult to pedal UP so down will be better eventually.
I can see the merits of the descent from the Calf back to sedbergh, but the little run down through the woods at Murthwaite is a cracker. I really enjoy this bit.
BTW Lowey, did you get the car fixed?
Yes mate... seized cv joint.
Steep climb but its grassy and not very technical (so not loads of fun going down I'd have thought)
Wrong! I did the descent down from The Calf over Bramm Rigg Top down past Winder again the other day, and it's bloody fantastic. Not very technical but loads of fun little drops and bumps to jump off, super-fast, and amazing views.
The VG Guide describes the Bowderdale BW as being disappointing - boggy etc - not tried it yet though.

whoever wrote that was a tart :o)
Sorry for dragging the thread back, just wanted to say a big thanks from me and pete to everyone who was there. Such a great day, will be trying to fit in a long weekend before the end of summer, so hopefully catch up with some of you again. Pete wants a new bike now, but thinks it might have gears 🙂
Rich - glad you enjoyed it - the next one is already planned!
