Hi, i know this isnt a mountain bike question, but i know you guys are helpful and know your onions. I have an issue with my partners bike, the thread of the gear indicator that screws into the axle key has snapped off inside the hub. i need to strip the hub down to remove the axle key so i can remove the snapped threaded end of the gear indicator. does anyone have any hints and tips which may aid me?

This is probably the cheapest fix - innards on eBay

Any idea how it happened? It's not something I've seen happen much.

Thanks for info, wasnt as bad a job as I predicted, just fiddly. Took probs 2 hrs and now as good as new, in fact it seems easier to change ear now. The hardest part was doing the cones up so that everything was snug but not loose or tight. I think it happened because the gear indicator wasnt removed when the mrs tried fixing her puncture, I think it got caugh when she was bolting her axle up.

That would have been a tricky job - full marks for patience. ๐Ÿ™‚

If you undid the drive side cones, make sure you have the same length of axle protruding on reassembly.

It's usually 24mm on the 3 speed.
