[#7024494]

Currently running a on-one Smorgasbord rear/Chunky Monkey Front on my Codeine, but with summer coming and miles increasing I could really do with something less draggy on the rear.

I've played with Rocket Rons before but the sidewalls are paper thin for tubeless setup.

So what sits in between the two extremes?

Thinking

Ardent
Nobbly Nick
Others??

Currently running a Specialized Purgatory Grid here, complete with beefy sidewalls and a UST carcass. It's holding up pretty well on the flinty stuff.

Captain Control? I haven't used the 29er but the 26er's been brilliant on the back of my hardtail. Not super-tough but tough enough

The Captain is a great fast moving tyre. Don't get the S-Works one!! I have had so many punctures with it 🙁

Vredistan black panther xtrac are good for summer grippy when you need it and roll really really well and side walls really hold up I'm using 26" and 29" on a few bikes now

Hutchinson toro, I've went from continental to these and they are great, light, fast rolling and super grippy and more importantly cheap from France at the minute, 2 for £54 delivered, folding and tubeless ready.

Just swapped from a Purgatory to a Ground Control grid here, seems to roll quicker but still grip well (dry and dusty conditions only tested so far!)

The grid carcass is sturdy enough for rocky terrain IME.

Rons do work perfectly tubeless, but if you want tougher sidewalls there's Snakeskin or Double Defence variants. Or Ralphs, or Burts.

Ardent 2.4 on front and either an Ardent 2.3 or an Ardent Race 2.2" on the back depending on how loose you like your rear 🙂

I run these on a 650b FS but should also be good on a 29er

My Maxxis IKON Exo has taken more abuse over Brecon Beacons rocks than I ever dared imagine it would and has never let me down. Really good on the road and fireroads too. I only change it on the back for a Beaver when the going gets proper claggy.
