[#7615794]

I have to replace my front wheel, and am confused by the different configurations. [Sorry, but I have always just used whatever came on my bike!]

In any case, the bike is a 2009 GF Big Sur, and I need a 26" tubeless-ready wheel. I thought a 15mm axle was pretty standard, but have now encountered a Hope hub with a 20mm axle, and this WTB wheel with an unspecified hub, but a 9mm axle.

How do I know what I need? 😳

EDIT: I have no interest in the wheel I linked to. It looks a mess.

Are you sure its a 09? According to bikepedia GF Big Sur was only made up to 08. Those models look to have Fox forks which take a regular quick release or 9mm axle. What forks do you have?

Hope hubs can be converted from 20mm to 15mm easily with a couple of adapters costing £12-13.

A photo of your existing wheel/axle/hub would be handy

2008 is the last one they got in North America. Here in the UK, fortunately, we got an extra year. All the specs can be found here, including what forks it has.

Sorry. Was out all day, so no pics. But for specs you might understand, look at the link in my post above. In the meantime, if anyone wants to explains wheels, hubs, and axles, feel free!

Yes, I am trying to keep this thread alive because I need answers so I can get a new wheel and get the mountain bike back on the trails. So please help.

I have now looked at the wheel (a Bontrager Duster), but still cannot tell what hub it has. The LBS removed the axle, but what's left makes it look like it was 15mm.

The hub itself bears a logo I have never seen before, though, and cannot find anything like it online. Here it is:

In any case, I have found a Bontrager Racelight on eBay in my (very low) price range, but it has a 9mm axle. So, any word on whether or not I can use it?

The Hope would cover all options, as you can buy adaptors for 9mm/QR, 15mm, and 20mm axles for them.

To know which yours is did it have a standard quick release? If so it's a 9mm axle. Or did the whole lever/axle come out when you undid it? If so it's probably a 15mm (maybe 20mm, but less likely on an XC bike).

That looks like a 9mm qr to me (the fork on the 09 big sure)

Hi there, its easy to check. Your fox fork would have been right on the cusp of 15mm axle introduction, check your fork tips if they are slotted open dropouts itll be 9mm quick release if they are closed, as in just a 'hole' on each leg then they're 15mm.
