Hi All,

I'm thinking of replacing the bearings in my (2006) Stumpjumper. Does anybody have any advise prior to staring or have a how to guide?

Will I need a blind bearing puller for some/all of the bearings?

I've been "refreshing" mine on my 2010 stumpy today. Didn't see the point in changing them with winter on its way but the two pairs of bearings above the dropouts were barely moving. The rest of them weren't that bad but still a little notchy.

I decided to try removing the rubber seals on each bearing in situ and give them a damn good clean out.

I used de-greaser, blast of water from hose, loads of gt85 then repacked them with grease and replaced the seal. They came up sparkling and have went from virtually no movement to feeling like new. Amazing how much crap was in them.

Lots easier and cheaper than replacing and should get me through the winter before I buy new ones.

Now that is a stunning idea, did you do anything other than dismantle and remove the covers with a sharp knife blade?

I just prised the cover off one side with the end of a stanley blade, squirted the de-greaser in and pushed the balls around with something pointy, rinsed out with a blast of water and repeat until they looked clean. Few squirts of gt85 or wd with the straw to get right in there then used a grease gun to get the grease right in.
The cover went back on no probs - possibly not as water tight as when new but judging by how much crap had gotten in they're not that well sealed to start with.
