The rim on my bmx wheel has a green anodised finish. It's starting to wear off from braking, the only problem is that the powdery residue is rendering the already crap brake useless!
Shall i just set on it with some fine wet/dry to remove it?

That might be the alu underneath the Anodising which is oxidizing. It's like a white furry powder. Eitherway, scotchbrite pad and elbow grease should sort it. Either that or you used to be able to get abrasive rim blocks for sorting out rim brakes.

What he said, white powder is alumninium oxide.
The anodising is harder than the aluminium underneath so expect the wear to accelerate once it's worn through the anodising.
