Only thing I can suggest is that you check you have the latest version on the app.

Check that you have not turned your phones sync settings off. I did this by mistake and couldnt work out whatwas wrong.....

Neither - Report a Bug on the site (paly/App/strava) with version of the app, device and description, unfortunately the bug tracking isn't on STW. Until it's reported it might not get fixed.
The Strava site was down for planned maintenance last night BTW
On my iPhone 3GS I had a similar issue that was resolved by logging out and logging in again… maybe worth trying.
Happened to me.
My SD card was full on the phone and this caused the error
Strave FAQs will tell you to log out and log in. Worked for me.
Weird.
Logged out then couldn't log back in. Switched off wireless and tries with 3G.
Result.
