So I've joined Strava and downloaded the app. I can see some segments in my local area but I can't work out how to ride/follow the segments so that I can be ranked along with the other riders of that segment.
Do you just ride round and strava figures out whether you are on a segment or not or do I have to do something else?

that's it
or do I have to do something else?
It can tell if you don't shout 'Strava Run' at other riders and will not allow you to claim a KOM unless you do. Same goes for cutting corners - make sure you take at least one or two short cuts so you can differentiate your track from the one that all the 'losers' took.

Just remember that the only real competition you have is yourself and you'll be fine.
You can also add a new segment in (it tries to prevent you making one too similar to another) and Strava then retrospectively builds the leader board. Excuse me if you know this already!
Also edit the proximity settings so if you start from home it doesn't repeatedly show people where you live. Again, this is easy enough to do.
Enjoy the stats ๐
As well as the privacy thing (set 2 or 3 to enlarge the area it hides) make sure you don't allow your full name to be made public, either hide it in the settings or just don't enter it in the first place. It's not that much of a leap to work out that the top riders in an area are most likely be on nice bikes, and if they've got their full name in there an unscrupulous type can easily put 2 & 2 together.
It always amazes my that in the "Bikes" section, people add a complex description of thier dream Ti-carbon XTR, Fox F10000, enve-y wheeled bike for all to see.
Mine are "MTB" and "Road" thats it.
Anyway yes, ride and enjoy. By watching your rides in Strava you'll soon get to recognise the segements if you want to compete within the leader boards.
And don't forget to join the Singletrackworld.com Forumites club. ๐
You guys are being a bit mean to the OP.
Why hasn't anyone told him that you have to touch in and out with your smartphone on lampposts at the start and end of sections?
