[#7314208]

I finally managed to get my garmin showing the strava segments and noticed one pop up yesterday when riding.
When it pops up with the time you are ahead/behind is this based on the KOM or your previous best? I noticed in the top of the screen it had my previous best.
And is the ahead/behind time real time or overall time? e.g if it says 6 seconds behind is that at that point in time or a projected figure from current speed etc?
I think what im trying to get at is that I have a couple of hills I want to improve on. More consistency than speed initially.
I have never tested it properly but sometimes I go too fast to start with then burn out whereas I would like to see how I get on pacing myself better even though the time may not be any different.

Does your Garmin not support the Virtual Partner feature? I've used that in the past to compare my own performance

I think the timing is based on where you are on the trail.
There's a segment near me that goes through a gate, the time ahead/behind stays the same as if the leader has also had to open the gate, so it's not averaged.

My garmin 810 has got virtual partner but I thought it was only for the whole route.
Good point well made about the gate scenario ant77.
I didn't think this latest garmin-strava update would interest as I'm not really fussed about the whole KOM thing but when it popped up yesterday and said I was 6 seconds behind I though I'm not having that and put more effort in. It could be great for personal achievements.

I have set up quite a few "private" segments so that I can compare against my own PB's rather than KOM's. I quite like the feature so far for that reason, will see if it keeps my interest through winter but for the short term I am feeling quite motivated whenever I hit on of the segments.

I think you have to be a little sensible, not set up too many and keep them aligned with your fitness goals (for instance on my regular winter 2hr loop, I have set up 5 segments of around 10 mins each).

At my current weight and fitness there is not much point comparing myself to the KOM's and if I want to I can view them online afterwards to feel the humiliation.

I have found that if you click the folder icon from the main page on your Garmin then click 'Strava live segments' then select a segment and click 'leaderboard' you can choose to target PB, KOM or what I think is the best time of the people you follow on Strava. I guess this will then be the time that you are up against when riding the segment.

Mine seems to have selected a Strava friend as the default goal for all segments but can anyone tell me how I can change this so that it automatically puts me against the KOM?? You can change segments individually but that will take an age!!

I haven't even seen that screen you mention on the garmin.
is yours a 810 or 1000?

Time is compared to whatever is at the top of the screen - your PB, the KOM or other people you follow all seem to be on there by default. When the segment pops up you can scroll at the top to choose what you're racing against.

Split is at that point in the segment, in real time, so if you put on a spurt at the end in your PR, and ride steadily a subsequent time you will see your distance behind increase (or ahead narrow if you're going faster!).

I was following one on the way home from work last night, the time was jumping all over the place (I think at one stage it jumped from 15 seconds behind to 1 minute 20 ahead) It would be nice to know exactly how it works.

You can set the time that shows on the screen (Edge 810) by clicking on the folder icon > My Strava Segments > select the segment and select from the 3 options (PB, KOM, other).

The instruction wording may not be totally correct as I don't have my 810 here.

Edit:- As Jamz says above ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Exactly how I said. If it's flitting around like that then either you have a bad signal or the trace you're following has some oddities. I've never seen anything like that sort of swing, and I've been manually adding Strava segments onto mine for over a year, that's exceptional.
