Anyone do the climbing challenges? The Everest one is interesting and the Giro one is a doozy! I signed up for it but when you start to do the maths!!! Hats off to anyone completing it.

If you believe the leader boards, lots of people have already completed it.

Yeah, I'm doing the Everest one.
Don't think I'll have anywhere near enough free time to do the Giro one - what is it, getting on for 700m of climbing every day through May?

Can't see the Everest one being that hard. I'm 20% there and I haven't done a hill session yet this week.

The Giro one looks like a doozy. Would probably be a bit dull without some picturesque mountains to ride up, though. Laps of Swain's gets a bit tedious more than twice a week.

Everest one will be a doddle.

Entered the Giro one just to see how far I can get. Not optimistic though as it's not even the full month.

Everest easy...
Giro? Only riding the mountain bike and it being winter now may make it tricky. It's 18 trips to the top of the biggest local Hill

I would need to get a Garmin or similar my phone only seems to record 2/3 the ascent of what a garmin does.

Just for balance, the Everest one for me will still take a bit of effort on my part. I can get out maybe 3 times a week and I'll need to add a bit onto that too to finish it. The Giro one will need some big big rides that I don't realistically have the time for, I've a small 4 day road tour in May which will get me quite a few metres though.

Like the guy leading the Everest challenge who's managed 448,000ft of climbing over 145 miles in the last week alone ๐Ÿ˜†
I'm sure it's not a Garmin/Strava fault there!

I've entered the Everest one, one ride done so far and 22% (1999m) complete so should get it rattled off, although I have a weekend off the bike completely coming up.

Saying that I've got a big ride planned this weekend, the Rhayader Marathon (should be good for well over 2000m) and the Cheshire Cobbled Classic (nigh on 3000m once I ride there and back) so it shouldn't take that much topping up.

Giro one, not a hope in hell for me with the amount of riding I get to do.

Are you sure those figures are right? They work out at 3100ft of climbing per mile (5280ft) and since you need to descend as well it's effectively 6200ft of climbing per mile ...

My target this year is 2x the Strava monthly climbing challenges. Done all right so far but it's 18k for May, so may as well add a bit and do it in 3 weeks.

That's my point exactly!
There was a one a couple of months back where the guy was doing something daft like 50,000ft climbing one way on his 10 mile commute ๐Ÿ™„

I completed all the climbing challenges last year, but this year Strava have made them a lot easier for some reason.
If they're going to do that they should give badges for 100%, 200% etc instead of 25%, 50%, 75%.

The Giro one would be fine if you lived in the Alps or Spain and could just ride bikes all day every day. But it's 1000m of climbing per day on average! I'm not even going to sign up for that!

The Everest one will be fine, it's only 8848m over a month. Can get that done in 5 or 6 rides if I put my mind to it.

Same old rubbish. Strava *still* refuse to acknowledge and distinguish mountain biking, so it makes the challenges largely pointless for me. Sure I can challenge myself to do the distance / climb, but it's the fun of comparing with others that makes it interesting. I don't look at the full leaderboard as top bazillion will be roadies and I don't stand a chance. I filter based on people I follow and it's better, but still problem is half the people I follow ride a mix of road, commute and off road. I just can't compare.

Although climbing challenges are the ones I still sign up for as at least there I stand more of a chance compared to distance, and the top few I follow I know have road miles in there. But then another catches you out... uplifts.

Deadkenny - Totally agree on the distance ones, but why do you think the climbing ones aren't relevant?

I tend to do about the same ascent per hour (400m, give or take) whether I'm on my road bike or MTB.

I sign up to the distance and climbing challenges every month, I've only managed to get the distance badge once, but I do the climbing one in about a week on average. Everest should be easy enough, but the Giro one is going to be tricky, looking at previous months I normally managed about 14500m during the whole month, so 21,000m in 3 weeks is going to take some doing.
Might have to do some riding for fun to up the climbing.

They're a bit more relevant I suppose, but it's location based. I can compare to people I know in my area and often I'll do well off road as most the road riding while may be on the same hills, doesn't clock up the same elevation in a ride as the off road is a lot more up and down. So in a way it's the opposite problem. But then I'm following people who live or are visiting proper hills and just can't tell if that's road or off road, and plus as I mentioned uplifts skew it completely.

Just needs some categorisation. MTB ride, road ride, uplifted ride so it will ignore the climbs, etc. Can keep the combined challenges, but if the rides can be categorised then they can be filtered better or have specific filtered challenges.

Not going to happen. We've been asking for this for ages and Strava have no interest in off road. Yet they are happy to break snow sports into multiple disciplines. They've even added an e-bike category!

A friend of mine was saying she uses Strava when horse riding but it doesn't have a horse riding category either so she just has to put it as walking. Fastest walk along a beach ever!

The distance challenges are roadie ones only but I use it to see where I am each month, climbing all have been easy so far, knock them over within a couple of weeks. Everest may take a little longer thankfully as it will keep me going a bit more. Giro ๐Ÿ˜† though when you compare locals a lad here will do it so the terrain here isn't a problem it's time and motivation - seeing as there was snow yesterday the ridable mountain got smaller

I haven't bothered with the Giro, as I'm on holiday for a week of it and it would be too much to catch up. ๐Ÿ™
I'll just have to spend my time lying around drinking beer instead. ๐Ÿ™‚

Look at the altitude spikes on the graph! The first one hits over 10,000m! It's as if the receiver is acting like it is reacting to the now defunct SA signal

That 20,000ft jump in elevation must have come as a shock, I thought Stealth at Thorpe Park was bad enough.

Yes. Very handy when around here even just a 10 mile evening ride is +3000 feet ๐Ÿ™‚

A mate in Spain was banned from "competing" in these challenges back when Strava launched and they ran competitions with prizes. He works as a cycle guide (mostly road), it's pretty hilly round there and he was racking up over 30,000m of climbing a month without even trying! He's currently on 21,000m in 11 rides.

Guess it's fine if your day job is riding your bike!

I'm on 5100m (57%) so far without really putting too much effort into it. This weekend is limited to only a quick ride tomorrow early doors though and nothing at all the following weekend so might have to think about it a bit more towards the end of the month...

3543m on both challenges. Which surprisingly has me in the 14568/80335 in the Giro challenge, I'm not really expecting to complete it, just see how much I can do but I thought I'd be alot further down the list than this.

Okay how do you get the challenge to work.....I signed up late like this week but even doing a couple of rides it does not register my elevation......all my account is on privacy setting if that makes any difference......

answer right there, you need to share your activity. Just pop a privacy zone around work and home.

I don't think strava count your rides if they are set to private

I'm mildly amused that both Christian Knees and David Lopez, who are riding the actual Giro for Team Sky, have also signed up for the Giro climbing challenge. Genius.

They seem to be doing okay, though Lopez has climbed around 100m more than Knees... both somewhere around 120th place overall. I wonder if he's been sneaking out for early morning ride-ettes to up the climbing... ๐Ÿ˜‰

I'm assuming people are using the Strava elevation correction or the phone app, right?

Just joined the Giro one, and I'm at 32% done, but I could bag a lot more metres if I went back and corrected the previous rides. As I'm unlikely to trouble the top 1000, I might just try it 'au natural' (Garmin 520 btw)

Quick totting up gives me 1014m to average for the next 16 days which is about what I would be doing anyway...

What ever the generic setting is bob.

Using an edge 500

Did 2900m yesterday

On 7500m total

Last time I did Rapha Rising, I found myself with something like 2500m to climb on the last day and only a couple of hours free. So I went back and corrected the elevations and found I didn't need to do the last ride at all (which I did anyway, head hanging in shame...)

I do the challenges using my garmin. Last time I tried the elevation correction on strava it knocked 100m off my 400m ride. Won't be doing that again.

I have entered the Everest challenge this month but life will be getting in the way of me being able to complete it, I suspect. Managed 7300m last month, which still wouldn't be enough.

Just finished the Giro Climbing Challenge today - I'm a bit nailed, but overall it wasn't as bad as I'd feared, even for a very average rider like me. Mixed up road, cross and mountain bike miles, took things steady, enjoyed the sunshine and just used it as a not too serious way of getting out more on the bike. Not sure I'd have managed it if the weather hadn't been so nice. Helps that I live on the edge of the Peak and work from home.

Anyone else having a crack at it?
