Sounds a bit suspect to me!

Parcels 2 go should be able to give you a quote though.

TBH (and I've not used ebay for quite a while) but I've always stuck to selling items within the UK only, you do still get requests to estimate shipping costs to France, Canada or the Czech Republic, but I think it best to leave these sales well alone and politely tell them I only trade within the UK.

Is there a thriving Indonesian Retro-bike scene?

I had a similar question from chap in China when selling a USE SUB fork. I got a quote for shipping, then added 30%. He paid in advance, good as gold. After I sent it he sent me an email saying how pleased he was with it, he was the envy of all his friends etc. So basically, as long as you get the money before sending it's kosher, if he asks for some weird convoluted method of payment he's most likely a wrong 'un.

Although after doing some detective work on his feedback he has bought a number of things from Uk members and has 100% positive feedback with glowing reports.

What sort of thing could go wrong? If i recieve payment is there any way that can be reversed by him?

Dave

Tell them for nostalgic reasons you don't ship to Indonesia 😉

paypal and send the frame tracked.
if you don't have any record of the frame being delivered then he could claim the payment back via paypal.

I'm a bit confused by all this. What is the frame? Is it possible that its a frame the person may have had before, and wants to own again?

Unlike here, there's a lot of people on Retrobike who live in far corners of the world, lots of collectors in Eastern Europe, Far East, Australia, Americas etc. Doesnt mean they are dodgy, but worth doing a few simple checks anyway.

Yeah, i see it as exactly that. He has once owned the frame ( 2008 Trek Remedy 6) and wants to own another.

I havent seen any of these frames for sale in the past 2 years.

Make sure your funds have cleared before posting and you only post to the paypal registered address (not to any other address he emails to you). Stick to that and you should be fine if it turns out to be fraudulent.

I just shipped my krampus to Sweden with www.bikeflights.com

130 USD, tracked all the way with FedEx.

As long as its paid for in advance, I wouldn't have any issues shipping elsewhere.

MrLugz thank you i will be using them if all goes well.

Next question for an ebay amateur....

So the add has 6 days left. I realise that it is 'against Ebay rules' for a buyer to contact you and offer to buy it outright away from ebay. But if I suggested it, am i able to stop the auction prematurely? Obviously if nobody else has bidded.

Is this your same international buyer? If so stay within ebay.

I sold a cannondale to a chap in South Korea when I was living in the states. It took a while to get there and he was becoming a little nervous. PayPal took the funds back. However, when the bike was delivered, everything resolved to both our satisfaction. So, proceed with caution. Look for seller protection such as confirmed address etc. cover yourself basically but remember, it can work work both ways. There has to be an element of trust for it all to keep working really. We do have a global market now after all. 🙂 Also, more bidders means a better end result for you. Especially when emotions are involved.

I wouldn't rule him out, as above so long as he checks out and you stay within eBay, PayPal etc then you should be fine. I wouldn't end the auction early though as if you sell outside of eBay you'll lose any protection they may offer.

The pound has been trashed over the last few years so things look cheaper to folks overseas. Chances are even if he pays what we consider a premium, and then postage on top of that, he's still getting a decent deal in his own currency.

If no one's bidded I would have thought you could add a "Buy it now" price to the auction and he would be able to snap it up.

So you ripped him off on the shipping?

Or added a little to cover packing it safely?

Always good to read the comments people leave (sounds like you have), not just rely on the percentages. I only sell to the UK but recently a guy in Italy won one of my auctions. He then asked for a shipping price and refused to pay it.

Looking at his 100% positive feedback - he's got loads of history for exactly this. Unfortunately ebay's stupid rule of not allowing sellers to leave negative feedback means the only way you can warn other people is to leave positive feedback and then put the details in your comments.

LBS owner's wife is from Thailand originally.

They have been buying up old 26" balloon tire Schwinn type bikes to send to Thailand. They have about 60 so far, and are looking for another 20 or so. The buyer in Thailand plans to use them for decor in bars, restaurants, and such so only wants American style bikes which were not available in Thailand.

You CAN end the auction to the highest bidder at any time up until 12hrs before the end of the auction

Perfectly legit and within eBay rules. You can then add on the difference on the invoice. The main problem here is in claiming back the cash if it all goes wrong

Btw - postal tracking isn't possible outside this country

Royal Mail can tell you when it's left and when it was transferred to receiving country postal service but they can't track it after that.

Hmmm interesting.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Slightly worrying about the tracking side. Surely you can track globally with FedEx or similar?!

Not heard anything back as of yet, but to be fair with £160.00 Postage costs, i'm not suprised!
