I was reading a thread on a touring forum about 'straightline touring'. it was a bloke in Texas, who drew a line on a map, and followed it for 2 weeks. good idea I thought, I might try that over here for a weeks ride.

so north or south? east or west is a no goer I reckon from sunny leeds.

Just how straight should this straight line be?

I guess it could be completely straight but have width that you need to stay inside. The narrower the line, the harder route planning becomes.

Sounds like a good idea.

I think he just followed as close to the line as he could.
offroad from leeds would be good. Dales, North Pennines and Northumberland.

North South East or West lacks imagination. Pick a random compass bearing then see how close you can stay to it. I would certainly be tempted to take a line towards Sedbergh though. Ooh look, keep going and you get pretty close to Sty Head and can end up coming down into Ennerdale.

A while back xkcd had a "random geocache" thingy that generated a random location near you; maybe you could pick two sort-of-random-ish points and just cruise from one to t'other...

Edit: here:

What about riding to (possibly even sunnier) Leeds in Kent...?

Ohhhh. I like the geohashing thing. Just downloaded the app. If I use that twinned with the map site I posted earlier, I can generate random circular cycle friendly routes.

Cheers!
