Looks like we can get to Stockholm for a weekend break. But I am not sure we want to be in a city, I was thinking of finding an AirBnB cabin or cottage out in the countryside. I'm not sure what to expect though. How far would one have to drive from Stockholm (probably Arlanda) to find the classic Scandinavian lake/forest type places? Any suggestions for some nice places to search? We'd probably be there in winter, how likely is snow? Or would it just be slushy?

Depends when in winter. I'd drive north to,somewhere like Järvsö . Otherwise the snow starts around Malung/ Falun / mora , or take an internal flight to my neck of the woods, Åre / Östersund .

Yeah I'd like to fly all the way up North but trying to keep costs down.

But you're coming to Sweden 🙂

When are you thinking of going over?

Mid Jan probably. If we do it. My wife asked for some time away from the kids as a Christmas gift, and I have SAS points. Only enough for one flight though.

Uppsala is very nice too , nice and close to Stockholm .or you can take a boat from Stockholm out into the archipelago and you'll be alone . Snow isn't guaranteed but it should be about
