[#11454446]

I've broken the mech hanger on the Marin, only a few months after bending another one. Thanks to Sprockets cycles, I've a new one on the way. The last in the UK, no more until "sometime" next year.

I've had 3.5 years out of the thing. But I like how it handles and goes. All the parts are ok (apart from needing rear wheel rebuild, which is booked).

So, do I stick and be patient for a new hanger, hoping I don't break another over the winter? Do I go for something like a Sonder Transmitter frame (I think that's virtually plug and play) or look for shiny new on the never never?

I'm not flush with cash...

Order 3 hangers and keep riding until you can afford the upgrade or maybe tout for a swap?

sell frame, buy new frame and rear wheel - ride away happy knowing you made a sensible financial compromise that allays the fears of not being able to ride during lockdowns for the next year or so due to lack of mech hangers

That's exactly it somafunk - mrs_oab is suggesting n+1, but having just bought the Merlin, I'm not wanting to splash out silly money to replace what is a working bike....yet don't want to find myself bike-less for want of a tiny part...

I don’t want to stand in the way of an N+1 but can the bent hanger be straightened?  I had an unlucky run of hanger bending and breakage and a cheap hanger alignment tool wasn’t much off the price of one new mech hanger for my Whyte

Sell the Marin frame only and get a Sonder Transmitter I reckon. Not a wildly expensive frame but meant to be decent. Seat tubes are a bit taller then I’d ideally like but it’s not a deal breaker.

That’s assuming you can get spare hangers for the Sonder that is - otherwise you’re not better off.

I have to say the new Sram universal mech hanger is a great idea if it gets adopted by enough bike manufacturers - could make life a lot more simple if most bikes have the same hanger. Think it’s also got a bit of rotation in it to help save the mech / the hanger if it takes a small hit.

I think there's a couple of standard systems - doesn't Cotic use one?

I can't straighten the bent one - it went in the bin, along with the twisted mech.

Matt, see link to BETD's range of mech hangers - it's probably the widest selection in the UK.

Can you get a hanger from bets, Pilo, gearmech hanger or similar. You might find one of you check their sites. There might be others...

I'll email them all - but having looked earlier tonight, I can't see a Marin no.40 listed...

Buy two. You'll probably never bend another one again.
