[#7441563]

I' min the market for a new 50mm or so stem, must me nice and stiff without nasty creaks! Choices are:

Thompson elite 4x 50mm
Easton haven 55mm
Hope AM / FR 50mm

So, STW do your worst...

the bar clamping system is much better than Thomson.

Not had any creaks from my Thomson in that length, it looks great as well, super boxy and chunky.

I'm leaning towards the Haven at the moment, Thompson second.

Has to be 50mm minimum so the Funn is no good.

Renthal Apex?

That's a nice bit of machining. Couldn't say whether it will creak or not!

I' heard the apex creaks, so that's out. As for the coding, really good value but fugly!

The haven instructions are clamp top ones fully down then the bottom to spec.

Syntace Megaforce 2.

Seriously, google it. Doesn't get any lighter or more subtle.

My Renthal is so creaky it's almost musical.

Easton Haven. Very nicely machined and stiffer than the Thomson and without the creaking. The Hope is probably stiffer but it's also got garish graphics.

RAceface blamed a Funduro stem for breaking my mate's bars. I have no idea if it was true, or not, but still.

Stems are pretty simple components tbh, I have a Pro FRS on one bike, a nicer KCNC on another, had a Haven before, can I tell any difference without scales? Nope.

My apex doesn't creak. It needs to be clamped in a similar way as described above for the Haven.

I believe it is the renthal duo is prone to creaking,

I also have a straight line 50 mm stem. Not the prettiest, but sturdy. Also clamps like the haven, though not as good looking.

Race Face Turbine 60mm, Super light @ 123g (lighter than Syntace) Quality to match Thomson and Hope. I have been using two of these of both of my bikes for last 2 years (no creaking). I have had both Hope and Thomson, this is every bit as good. This is my third and surplus, £35 posted

Not lighter than a Syntace. The 60mm Syntace is 127g. I run a 30 mm which is 107g. If you want to quote weights get your facts in order 😉

Never mind the 4g weight penalty 😉
The Syntace Megaforce 2 stems are faultless.

Dunno if the Turbine matches other brands for quality - they had the breaking faceplate issue. Personally wouldn't touch one,

Also, the Turbine only goes down to 60mm as it's more of an XC/Tril type affair than the others mentioned.

Megaforce FTW (sounds like an 80's cartoon, that).

I happen to be selling the Haven stem in 55mm flavour..

The Haven is nowhere near as stiff as the Thomson, I've had both. Sold my Thomson X4, bought a Haven. noticed how flexy it was and bought another Thomson.

Realised I've spent this entire thread pointing out errors without actually giving a recommendation.

Which is Thomson every time.

Can't fault by Thomson X4's. Both are fine after a few years of use with no creaking etc.

A bit? 254g for the 50mm, which us 6g heavier than two Syntaces.
