Hi,

Just a quick one, I ride a specialized stumpjumper fsr, the stem length is 105mm, I rode at the peak district today and gave a few of my mates a go of my bike and they all said I should change the stem to a shorter one, they said put a 75mm stem on it?

Do you think this is a good idea? what will the benefits of this be?

Could that extension in length, destroy the geometry of my bike/worsen my handling skills?

thanks for the help 🙂

depends on how you like the bike. It will move your weight further back and also quicken the steering. Good for descending, but not so good for climbing. a 30mm change is a bit step, if you think you "need" a shorter stem try a 90 mm first imo and see what you think

Borrow a few stems and try them out. I had a go of my mate's Blender with a little Roox stem and it felt brilliant - especially in really rough, steep downhilly stuff. So I've lashed out on a teensy stem - see thread here;

I might miss it for longer, landrover track type rides - time will tell.....

you guys reply fast!! much appreciated ... I was thinking that going from 105 - 75 mm was a huge step.. but thease guys have been riding for 20 years plus and they all said the stem was wayyy too long.

My back sometimes hurts which I am thinking could be down to my long stem.

I havent got anyone to lend one of, I have already tried that!

thanks hustler mate. Think I will do it,
the one I am looking at is a 6 degree rise, my current stem is 8 degree rise.

so going from a 105mm stem with 8 dergree rise to a 75mm stem with 6 degree rise, is 2 degrees much, will this effect the ride?

Worth a go. I've gone from 100mm too 70mm and prefer it. Had to tuck down a bit more on steep climbs but steering is more responsive and the front wheel is easier to pop.

My mate went from 90 to 110mm to get weight over the front wheel more. His very light carbon fork meant he wheelied to much on climbs.
