has anybody else had this at all? ive got a raceface atlas

basically when i do the headset up and tigthen everything up correctly, i go on a few descents and the creak comes back

now the thing thats very strange is when i undo the stem bolts i hear the exact same creak when unslackening the bolts

once i push down on the bars then, the noise is non existent and disappears

but tigthen it all back, and within a few compressions of the forks its there again

the headsets a hope one and all greased and fine, everywhere, seems very strange and a bit worrying the undoing the stem bolt and i can hear the creak too

any ideas?

back the bolts out put a touch of grease on each and pop them back in.

Strip down, clean and degrease everything thoroughly, then put a bit of grease on the bolts and some assembly paste on the interfaces between bar and stem and between stem and steerer.

Torque everything back up to recommended settings.

If it still creaks after that it may be new stem/bar time as that noise could be damage letting itself be known.

thanks, ive done the whole strip down and re-grease rebuild, only think not done is use assembly paste on it as ive never had to do that before

ive managed to sorce another stem and bar to try, and immediate indications suggest noise has gone, but only by pushing down and not riding a ride on them

the worrying noise is the bolt being undone, it lets out and almighty creak everytime it gets to a certain point, so not sure what that means, but its the same noise that's there when im riding

Whilst assembly paste isn't compulsory it does seem to stop tiny movements and reduce creaking, it also gives more safety margin if a bolt starts to work a bit loose, it'll have to go that bit further before things start to move.

I've got in the habit of using it now, you only need a tiny bit anyway so one small tube will last for years.

My 2 penneth anyway.
