Looking for a steel cx frame, for canti brakes, one bottle cage mount would be handy as would horizontal drop outs (but not a priority)

Also don't want a short head tube like a Surly cross check, like the look of the singular kite but not available till next year

Tried Salsa? FWIW I'm running a Casserol (with a disc on the front) off road, it's doing well but I've not ridden many cx frames to compare.

I'd love to go custome but don't think I can justify it

had a few on ones and planet x's over the years but was never that bowled over by them. Grand bikes but nothing special

Anyway, if you're going to use the bike off-road, then forward facing horizontal dropouts are a bad idea, so hadn't considered sssimon might be after that.

then forward facing horizontal dropouts are a bad idea

Why ❓ Millions of miles ridden off road on them!

Why

Because, if rear facing, you can push the axle to the front of the dropout when running gears, or use a chaintug if singlespeed, to prevent the wheel pulling forward. Neither option available with forward facing horizontal dropouts.
